Mazda cuts prices on the CX-70 PHEV and CX-90 PHEV
The reinstatement of federal subsidies for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles earlier this year has significantly boosted sales of these vehicles in Canada. However, due to a price cap of $50,000 (MSRP), among other conditions, some vehicles that were eligible under the previous program are now excluded.
The Mazda CX-70 PHEV and CX-90 PHEV were among them. That is no longer the case. The manufacturer has just revised the prices of these two models.
Starting today, the entry-level 2026 CX-70 PHEV GS-SC is available starting at $48,999, while the CX-90 PHEV GS is now priced at $49,999. Both models are therefore eligible for a $2,500 rebate under the Canadian government’s new Electric Vehicle Affordability Program (EVAP).
“We know that Canadians are increasingly concerned about their daily expenses, particularly those related to gas,” said Amy Fleming, President and CEO of Mazda Canada. “This update reflects our commitment to making electrified driving more accessible so that more customers can enjoy the benefits of plug-in hybrid technology in a way that fits their lifestyle.”
Aside from the Kia Sorento PHEV, the Mazda CX-70 PHEV (two-row) and CX-90 PHEV (three-row) are currently the only mid-size plug-in hybrid SUVs among popular brands. The CX-70 PHEV GS-SC has an estimated all-electric range of 51 km, while the CX-90 PHEV has a range of 42 km. Their sporty handling also makes them particularly appealing choices.
On the other hand, their powertrain (based on a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine) is not as refined or as powerful as the turbocharged inline-six with mild hybrid technology that comes standard. Furthermore, the issues some owners have encountered with the high-voltage battery, the engines, the transmission, and other components have tarnished their reputation.
Consumer Reports ranks Mazda’s two PHEV models among the 10 least satisfying vehicles of 2026. The same American magazine also identified the CX-90 PHEV as one of the 10 least reliable models of 2026. You’ve been warned.
