The Most and Least Satisfying Vehicles in 2026, According to Consumer Reports
Since more and more new-car buyers are extending their contracts and/or the length of time they keep their vehicles, it’s becoming essential to make the right choices. With that in mind, the “Best Buys” section of the Car Guide is a great place to start when shopping for a car.
Studies and rankings on initial quality and reliability are also useful. You can also refer to the American magazine Consumer Reports, which surveys its thousands of members every year to determine which models have the highest satisfaction rates. Basically, if they had to buy again, what percentage of them would choose the same vehicle?
The 2026 rankings show, first and foremost, that hybrid vehicles generally satisfy owners more than their gasoline-only counterparts. Sports cars, electric vehicles, and minivans that live up to their promises also please their owners, even if their reliability leaves something to be desired.
The Consumer Reports survey also reveals that low ownership costs and a fuel-efficient engine are among the main factors influencing satisfaction and the number of years a person chooses to keep their vehicle. Conversely, lack of reliability, cabin noise, and complex controls are often cited as reasons for dissatisfaction.

Note that the R1T and the Corvette held the same positions in 2025. The Defender and 911 also have a very loyal customer base. Four of the top 10 vehicles are all-electric models, and another is a hybrid. Unfortunately for the average buyer, the vast majority of these vehicles are high-end, high-priced models.

- Audi Q4 e-tron – 39%

As for this list, the Grand Cherokee 4xe and the Pacifica Hybrid have been dropped for 2026 due to significant issues. Mazda’s plug-in hybrid technology also doesn’t seem to be satisfying many American drivers. The ID.4 and Q4 e-tron are two electric cousins that have experienced various issues and recalls. As for the Corolla Cross, this is very surprising and highlights a clash of realities between the United States and Canada.
In closing, as Consumer Reports points out, the vehicles that owners like the most aren’t necessarily the ones that perform best in tests. “A model may have below-average reliability or fail to stand out in a particular area, yet still make its owners happy and satisfied,” explains Steven Elek, who oversees automotive data analysis at Consumer Reports.
