Nokian launches a studded winter tire that adapts to temperature
After decades of research aimed at creating a tire whose studs adapt to changing road and temperature conditions, Nokian Tyres has just launched the all-new Hakkapeliitta 01, described as “the world’s first winter tire to offer on-demand traction.”
This model features the Finnish tire manufacturer’s dual-action stud technology. The studs deploy in cold weather for instant, maximum traction on ice and snow, then retract in milder conditions for a comfortable ride and precise handling on dry roads.
According to Nokian Tyres, the Hakkapeliitta 01 reduces road wear by up to 30% compared to its predecessor. Grip on ice is improved by 10%, and grip on wet roads by 5%. That’s not all: it reduces noise levels by one decibel to make driving quieter. The best of all worlds? It certainly looks that way.
By the way, the tread compound is partly made from renewable materials, such as natural rubber, bio-based resin, and bio-based oils, including materials derived from pine resin and canola oil.
“The new Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta 01 represents one of our company’s greatest innovations since we launched the first winter tire more than 90 years ago,” said the company’s CEO, Paolo Pompei. “This new winter tire achieves what was previously considered impossible: a tire whose studs react to temperature changes to provide optimal safety while protecting the road surface.”
Nokian Tyres’ new Hakkapeliitta 01 tire will be launched in the fall of 2026, including in North America. Designed for both cars and SUVs and crossovers, it features the three-peak mountain certification symbol with a snowflake and the ice grip symbol.
