The Best Electric Cars in 2026

Of all the electric cars available on the market, the team at The Car Guide has compiled a list of the models that represent the best buys in this category.

In 2026, we made a slight adjustment to our approach. We no longer rank vehicles on a podium from first to third place. Instead, we prefer to tell you which vehicles are the most suitable and why.

The reinstatement of the federal subsidy on February 16 obviously changes the game for many consumers. The same goes for the current spike in gas prices. Note also that the new Kia EV4 wasn’t available yet at the time of selection for the 2026 Car Guide. However, as the least expensive electric car in Canada, it represents an affordable, high-quality choice.

BMW i4

The German compact electric sedan continues to evolve. For 2026, the eDrive40 version offers slightly more range (up to 536 km), while the top-of-the-line M50 xDrive has been renamed the M60 xDrive to reflect its increased power (now 593 horsepower with the temporary boost function activated)—enough to make the gasoline-powered M3 jealous.

Backed by a smooth and powerful powertrain, driving pleasure is one of this BMW’s key strengths, while its practical hatchback design is another advantage. These two qualities, along with others, make it a favorite of our team and one of our top picks in this category since 2024, even though prices can rise quickly depending on the model and options chosen.

Please note: The new 2027 BMW i3, based on the “Neue Klasse,” will replace the i4 when it hits the North American market, which is expected to happen around the beginning of 2027.

Hyundai IONIQ 6

While certainly less popular than the IONIQ 5 crossover, this Korean car is built on the same platform and stands out for its extremely fast charging speeds, thanks to a maximum charging capacity of 240 kW. In rear-wheel-drive configuration, the highly efficient IONIQ 6 offers a range of 550 km. With all-wheel drive, it can travel up to 509 km.

While rear-seat legroom and trunk space leave something to be desired, the in-car technology is user-friendly and comfort is a given. And let’s not forget to mention the vehicle’s generous 5-year/100,000-km warranty.

It’s important to note that the IONIQ 6 will receive a mid-cycle refresh. Unfortunately, this will be for the 2027 model year, and there will be no 2026 model in Canada. In addition to styling changes, Hyundai will add N Line and N versions, the latter being just as explosive as the Ioniq 5 N with up to 641 horsepower. Having already test-driven it, it’s a tremendous technical achievement.

Tesla Model 3

Finally, our team selected the must-have Model 3 not only because of its remarkable fuel efficiency—which translates to a range of up to 550 km—but also because of Tesla’s technological edge and its extensive, high-performance Supercharger network. The quality of the car and its build has also improved significantly following the 2024 update.

The brand’s image (influenced by its CEO, Elon Musk) has clearly hurt the Model 3 and its resale value. The same goes for the significant price hike caused by Canadian counter-tariffs. Moreover, remaining new vehicle inventory is extremely low. Tesla Canada will have to take action, perhaps by resuming imports from China now that the Canadian government allows 49,000 Chinese vehicles per year without a 100% surcharge.
