Top 10: the cars that use the least gas in 2025
Due to the carbon market that remains in effect in Quebec and inflation, fuel prices will not decrease. To save money at the pump, many motorists are practicing eco-driving, reducing their travel, or opting for more fuel-efficient vehicles.
On that note, after presenting the list of fuel-efficient SUVs, let's repeat the exercise with sedans and hatchbacks, which are generally more fuel-efficient and affordable. We selected the most efficient engine for each model. This disqualifies the gasoline-powered Hyundai Elantra, Honda Civic, and Toyota Corolla, all of which have ratings below 7 L/100 km.
Note: Fuel consumption data combines city and highway driving and comes from Natural Resources Canada. We excluded plug-in hybrids, which are classified here, as well as the Lexus ES 300h and Nissan Sentra 2025 (5.3 and 6.6 L/100 km, respectively). This is because they will soon be changing generations and their successors have not yet been evaluated by NRC.
10. Kia K4 (7 L/100 km)
2025 model retail price: starting at $23,995.
A cousin of the Hyundai Elantra, the Kia K4 has relegated the Forte to oblivion thanks to its bold styling, attractive equipment/price ratio, and spacious interior, thanks to its generous exterior dimensions. The lineup does not include an electrified powertrain, but we can console ourselves by looking at the very attractive hatchback version, expected this fall.
9. Nissan Versa (6.8 L/100 km)
2025 model retail price: starting at $20,798.
Although rumors are intensifying about the end of its production, the Nissan Versa is hanging on and will return in 2026. It is the last subcompact car and the least expensive new vehicle on the market. However, be aware of financing rates that may make its big sister, the Sentra, more attractive.
8. Toyota Crown (5.7 L/100 km)
2026 model retail price: starting at $55,227.
With its elevated driving position, luxurious interior, and high price tag, the Crown blurs the line between Toyota and Lexus brands, as well as between cars and SUVs. Speaking of Lexus, the next generation of the ES will feature the Crown Limited's powertrain, but will see its power increase from 236 to 243 horsepower.
7. Honda Accord Hybride (5.3 L/100 km)
2025 model retail price: starting at $43,000.
Still as reliable, practical, stylish, easy to use, and enjoyable to drive as ever, the Honda Accord has yet to dethrone the Toyota Camry. Buyers and the Car Guide team prefer the latter for its superior comfort, as well as the availability of all-wheel drive and entry-level models.
6. Hyundai Sonata Hybride (5 L/100 km)
2026 model retail price: starting at $36,199.
Hyundai is still putting energy into the Sonata, despite the decline in popularity of midsize sedans and the successive disappearance of its rivals. This year, the manufacturer is bringing the hybrid powertrain back to Canada, after it had been reserved for the United States since the 2024 refresh.
5. Toyota Camry (5 L/100 km)
Retail price for the 2026 model: starting at $34,575.
Exclusively hybrid and available with four-wheel drive, the Camry underwent a cautious technical and stylistic evolution in 2025, with the aim of retaining its loyal customer base. With a reputation for exceptional reliability, it should retain a high resale value, unlike the costs of ownership it incurs.
4. Honda Civic Hybride (4.9 L/100 km)
2026 model retail price: starting at $34,100.
Like the Accord, the Civic has two weaknesses compared to its Toyota competitor: the lack of all-wheel drive and a higher price range. However, the Honda stands out from the Corolla with its more engaging handling, lively performance, and newer onboard technology.
3. Toyota Prius (4.8 L/100 km)
2026 model retail price: starting at $38,365.
Unlike its predecessors, the fifth generation Prius is appealing both to the eye and behind the wheel. As usual, its fuel economy remains hard to match, despite the standard all-wheel drive system. Note that Toyota also offers a plug-in hybrid version of the Prius (220 horsepower and up to 72 km of range).
2. Hyundai Elantra Hybride (4.7 L/100 km)
2026 model retail price: starting at $31,499.
The Elantra is one of four compact hybrid sedans we pitted against each other in a comparison test for the 2026 Car Guide. Without giving away the results, let's just say that the Korean representative scored points for its contemporary design, but lost points due to its limited range. Hyundai offers only one electrified variant, the Luxury.

Retail price for the 2026 model: starting at $27,740.
Less expensive and more refined than the Honda Civic, the Toyota Corolla remains easy to recommend due to its many practical qualities: safety, reliability, and durability. Not to mention its low fuel consumption, even when opting for all-wheel drive. The latter uses a low-power rear electric motor that improves traction at low speeds.
