Top 10: The SUVs with the lowest fuel consumption in 2025

September 9, 2025 — Written by The Car Guide

Sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and crossovers continue to dominate new vehicle sales in North America—and automakers are always happy to add more models to their lineups in order to boost profitability.

Now, for consumers who want to save money at the pump, it's important not to look solely at fuel economy ratings or automatically opt for a hybrid model. It's essential to calculate the price difference between models and the mileage required to make it profitable based on the cost of gas.

That being said, which SUVs will consume the least gas in 2025? The Car Guide presents the top 10 below, unsurprisingly dominated by electric SUVs.

Notes: Fuel consumption data (combining city and highway driving) comes from Natural Resources Canada, and we have not included plug-in hybrid models as their electric range can skew the rankings. For plug-in hybrids, click here. Another exclusion is the Mazda CX-50 Hybrid (6.2 L/100 km), imports of which are currently suspended due to the customs surcharge.

10. Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid and Subaru Forester e-Boxer Hybrid (6.9 L/100 km)

Guillaume Rivard

2026 model retail price: starting at $43,799 (2025 Forester: $48,195)

These two hybrid SUVs have nothing in common, but we're grouping them together here because of their identical average fuel consumption. The former stands out with a third row of seats and a more spacious interior.

9. Hyundai Tucson Hybrid and Kia Sportage HEV (6.7 L/100 km)

Top 10: The SUVs with the lowest fuel consumption in 2025
Kia

2026 model retail price: starting at $43,799 and $41,245, respectively.

With their 2025 and 2026 updates, respectively, these two Korean compact SUVs have gained slightly in power (231 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque). Naturally, their prices have increased. The same goes for their average fuel consumption.

8. Toyota Highlander (6.7 L/100 km)

Top 10: The SUVs with the lowest fuel consumption in 2025
Toyota

2025 model retail price: starting at $50,850

Sales of the Highlander have dropped significantly since the arrival of the Grand Highlander, but the former remains slightly more fuel-efficient—by three-tenths of a liter, in fact! As always, it offers excellent resale value and unfailing reliability.

7. Lexus RX 350h (6.5 L/100 km)

Top 10: The SUVs with the lowest fuel consumption in 2025
Guillaume Rivard

2025 model retail price: starting at $62,590

Manufactured in Canada, the Lexus RX Hybrid is renowned for its reliability, meticulous assembly, high level of comfort, and wide range of engine options. The 350h version delivers 246 horsepower and averages 6.5 L/100 km. Not bad for a mid-size luxury SUV!

6. Honda CR-V Hybrid (6.4 L/100 km)

Top 10: The SUVs with the lowest fuel consumption in 2025
Honda

2026 model retail price: starting at $45,900

While certainly expensive, the CR-V Hybrid uses efficient, reliable, and inexpensive-to-maintain mechanics. However, our various tests have shown us that achieving the official fuel consumption rating is virtually impossible. At least there are plenty of options to choose from: four versions are available for the 2026 model year, including the new adventure-focused TrailSport.

5. Toyota Crown Signia (6.2 L/100 km)

Dominic Boucher

2025 model retail price: starting at $57,450

Replacing the Venza, the Crown Signia is a trendy-looking crossover that builds on the technical foundations of the Crown sedan, with an overall shape reminiscent of a station wagon. Unfortunately, it is only available in one fully equipped version in Canada (Limited).

4. Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and Lexus NX 350h (6 L/100 km)

Top 10: The SUVs with the lowest fuel consumption in 2025
Toyota

2025 model retail price: starting at $36,635 (NX 2026: $57,675)

The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and Lexus NX 350h are based on the same platform, four-cylinder engine, and wheelbase. Unsurprisingly, their fuel consumption is equivalent. Note: The RAV4 is getting a makeover for 2026 and will hit the market this winter.

3. Ford Escape Hybrid (6 L/100 km)

Top 10: The SUVs with the lowest fuel consumption in 2025
Ford

2025 model retail price: starting at $40,849

Whether it has two-wheel or four-wheel drive, the Ford Escape Hybrid averages 6 L/100 km and delivers a more interesting driving experience than average. Note: The 2026 model year will be the last for this venerable American compact SUV.

2. Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid and Lexus UX 300h (5.6 L/100 km)

Top 10: The SUVs with the lowest fuel consumption in 2025
Toyota

2026 model retail price: starting at $35,810 (2025 UX: $44,605)

Refreshed for 2026, the Toyota Corolla Cross is a highly sought-after vehicle. Customers' patience during the delivery delay is rewarded with superior performance compared to the gasoline model and remarkable fuel efficiency. The Lexus UX 300h, revised for 2025, features the same powertrain.

1. Kia Niro (4.4 L/100 km)

Top 10: The SUVs with the lowest fuel consumption in 2025
Kia

2026 model retail price: starting at $30,845

Across all categories, the Kia Niro remains the most fuel-efficient non-rechargeable vehicle on the market, even outperforming the Toyota Prius! The lack of all-wheel drive makes it more like a car... and eliminates it from the list of candidates for many consumers.
