Let’s start our overview of the best buys with the compact car category, where the two models that stand out from the crowd are also the two best-selling models.
The country’s best-selling car is one of the top picks of the Car Guide. It stands out for its enjoyable driving experience, excellent fuel efficiency, proven reliability, and strong resale value, which more than make up for its base price—which has surpassed the psychological threshold of $30,000 (including fees).
Available in both sedan and hatchback body styles, the Civic also offers exceptional build quality, a high level of comfort, and a spacious interior, including ample cargo space. Its five-door version can actually be a great alternative to many subcompact SUVs, despite the lack of all-wheel drive.
While the Civic’s base engine might be criticized for lacking a bit of power, the Civic Hybrid proves to be nicely dynamic (200 hp, 232 lb-ft) and fuel-efficient (averaging 4.9–5.0 L/100 km). Finally, higher up in the lineup, don’t forget the Civic Si, a sportier and more athletic sedan available exclusively with a manual transmission. Note that the formidable Civic Type R is currently on hiatus, but Honda has promised to update it later in 2026.

Other similarities: Toyota’s compact car is available in two body styles and features a highly efficient hybrid powertrain (4.7–5.3 L/100 km). While the hybrid powertrain is only available in the sedan, it does offer the option of all-wheel drive, which, while not spectacular, will give drivers peace of mind.
Regardless of the body style, some trade-offs must be made in terms of cargo space. In the case of the Corolla hatchback, this shouldn’t bother performance enthusiasts who opt for the ultimate version—the GR Corolla. This model relies on its more aggressive design, its 300-horsepower three-cylinder turbocharged engine, and its high-performance all-wheel drive to win over buyers.
