2027 Mercedes-Benz EQS: Minor Updates and Increased Range
Large luxury sedans don’t sell very well in Canada. Add an electric powertrain to the mix, and sales drop even further. The Mercedes-Benz EQS is a prime example. Only 56 units were sold in the country in 2025, a 61% decline from the previous year.
The car, which was launched as a 2022 model, has already received an update for 2025. Now it’s about to get another one. Mercedes-Benz has just announced the 2027 EQS, which features a more sculpted hood, star-shaped daytime running lights like those on the brand’s other new electric vehicles, redesigned taillights, and a more prominent rear diffuser.
The main changes are technical in nature. The battery’s usable capacity increases from 118 to 122 kWh while maintaining the same dimensions, and the electrical system is upgraded from 400 to 800 V to enable faster charging. In fact, the EQS will now be able to draw up to 350 kW from the most powerful DC charging stations instead of 200 kW, surpassing its rivals from Audi and Porsche.
In terms of range, the improvement is significant. Mercedes-Benz cites a maximum of 926 km according to the WLTP standard used in Europe, which is significantly more optimistic than ours. Expect around 684 km here, says the manufacturer, which is well above the 597 km of the current EQS. Official figures from Natural Resources Canada will be released at a later date.
It’s not just the battery that makes this possible. New in-house-developed electric motors (the front one can be disengaged as needed) and a new two-speed transmission at the rear also play a role, helping to reduce energy consumption at cruising speeds.
That's not all: regenerative braking has been improved and can recover about 33% more energy than before. Conventional brakes will rarely, if ever, need to be used.
Let’s continue by noting that some markets will have the option of an electronic steering system with a half-steering wheel in the driver’s hands, which will make turning maneuvers easier and improve the readability of the instrument panel. However, Canada is likely to miss out on this feature.
In addition, the lineup includes an adaptive suspension system capable of predicting road imperfections. The same goes for heated seatbelts in the front seats and airbags integrated into the rear seats, as in the 2027 S-Class. The new MB.OS operating system makes the infotainment system faster, and the optional rear screens have been upgraded from 11.6 to 13.1 inches.
The 2027 Mercedes-Benz EQS is expected to go on sale here around fall. Price increases are inevitable. As a rough guide, the cheapest version currently starts at around $147,000, including fees and the federal luxury tax.
