The best three-row mid-size SUVs in 2024
Among all the three-row mid-size SUVs on the market, the Car Guide team has compiled a list of the three models that represent the best buys in this category.
Although they sell less than compact models, these vehicles remain very popular, not least because of their versatility. In fact, the ability to carry up to eight people, plus a large trunk, appeals to a large number of consumers.
1- Kia Telluride/Hyundai Palisade
The Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride continue their domination for another year. Since their arrival on the market, they have climbed to the top of our rankings, never to fall again.
The two Korean SUVs share a large number of components, notably the chassis, running gear and engine, a naturally-aspirated 3.8-liter V6. But it's the body design and interior layout that should make you choose one or the other.
The Telluride plays a more adventurous card, with a more rugged appearance. This is particularly true of the X-Line and X-Pro versions. Inside, the steering wheel and center console are also different from those of Hyundai. On the Palisade, the softer lines and greater presence of chrome create a different ambience.
On the road, both vehicles stand out for their efficient handling, comfortable ride and smooth powertrain. Performance, while not particularly breathtaking, is quite adequate for a vehicle of this size. Inside, we also appreciate the quality of finish, soundproofing and space available.
The ride, which we found a tad more dynamic at the wheel of the Telluride, remains very similar for both vehicles.
The main shortcoming is fuel consumption, which remains high (just over 11 L/100 km). This is even truer when you consider that there are no electrified models in the range. This made us hesitate to keep both vehicles in first place. That said, it's possible that a hybrid version will make its debut for the 2025 model year. To be continued.
2- Toyota Highlander/Grand Highlander
Still very popular, the Toyota Highlander is now joined by a new player, the Grand Highlander. For the Japanese manufacturer, the aim is to offer a longer, more roomy vehicle to correct the criticisms levelled at the Higlander.
With the withdrawal of the V6 engine, the Highlander's base engine is now a 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. But the most relevant model is undoubtedly the hybrid, which delivers less power (243 hp instead of 265) but very low fuel consumption. In fact, the combined average is just 6.7 L/100 km, considerably lower than the Highlander with the turbo engine (9.9 L/100 km).
The Highlander is not as spacious as its rivals, especially in the third row. That's why the Grand Highlander makes its appearance this year. Thanks to its increased dimensions, occupants sitting in the very back are more comfortable, and the trunk is some 400 liters larger when all the seats are folded down!
In addition to the two aforementioned engines, the Grand Highlander also offers the considerably more powerful Hybride Max powertrain (362 hp and 400 lb-ft). It's a pity, though, that the latter is reserved exclusively for the top-of-the-range Platinum Max model.
Well-built, fuel-efficient in the hybrid version, reliable and offering excellent resale value, the Highlander remains a safe bet in its class, whatever version you choose.
3- Mazda CX-90
A recent arrival on the market, the Mazda CX-90 makes a remarkable entry, coming in directly at third place in our ranking. The CX-90 aims to approach the luxury segment, and with some success. The interior, although it could be more spacious, stands out for its superb quality of finish. The GT versions have nothing to envy from more expensive European competitors.
Like many of the vehicles in the range, the CX-90 emphasizes driving pleasure, proving to be more enjoyable than its direct competitors. Overall driving pleasure is also enhanced by the new 6-cylinder turbocharged engine. Rated at 280 or 340 hp, depending on the version chosen, this unit is smooth at low revs, supple yet powerful. And to make matters worse, its average fuel consumption of less than 10 L/100 km is impressive for a gasoline-powered SUV of this size.
Alternatively, you can opt for a plug-in hybrid version, with a 100% electric range of 42 km. An interesting vehicle for short journeys, but less relevant once the battery is depleted since the 4-cylinder consumes as much as the 6-cylinder without offering the same level of comfort.
