The Best Subcompact SUVs in 2025

March 21, 2025 — Written by The Car Guide

Among all the subcompact SUVs available on the market, The Car Guide team has compiled a ranking of the top three models that represent the best buys in this category.

Among them are some of the most popular vehicles in Quebec, mainly due to their appealing size but especially because of their more affordable prices and lower fuel consumption compared to compact or larger SUVs. They are also considered more practical than sedans thanks to their hatchback design. Furthermore, all of them offer all-wheel drive as standard or as an option.

1. Subaru Crosstrek

One year after the arrival of the third generation, the Crosstrek continues to highlight a number of attributes that make it competent and desirable for many drivers. It’s no surprise that it remains at the top of the category in the eyes of The Car Guide team!

Well-suited to our roads with its excellent all-wheel drive and finely tuned suspension, Subaru's subcompact SUV is designed to be safe and enjoyable to drive year-round. Its interior is ergonomic and spacious (though the trunk space is somewhat limited), while its range of engines caters to different buyers (opt for the 2.5-liter engine producing 182 horsepower whenever possible). The Wilderness version is aimed at the more adventurous, but of course, one must truly need it to justify such a purchase.

While the Crosstrek's fuel consumption is reasonable, it's worth noting that some competitors perform better in this regard. A hybrid version will be added for the 2026 model year. As for the price, we'll have to wait and see.

2. Toyota Corolla Cross

The Corolla Cross is the sensible choice given its blend of quality, reliability, safety, space, and comfort. One could also mention its low maintenance costs and high resale value, which help offset its purchase price.

Its driving experience is rather unremarkable, and the engines are noisy when pushed. However, they are very fuel-efficient. The Corolla Cross hybrid offers a rare combination of power and efficiency with its 196 horsepower and an average of 5.6 L/100 km. It’s a shame that it can sometimes be difficult to get your hands on one.

3. Hyundai Kona

Finally, the last spot on the podium in this category goes to the Kona, which was also completely redesigned a year ago. Regardless of the engine choice (naturally aspirated, turbocharged, or electric), Hyundai's small SUV impresses with its eye-catching design and its more generous space compared to before, both for rear passengers and luggage. In fact, it ranks among the best subcompact SUVs in this regard.

The enjoyable driving experience (despite somewhat limited rear visibility) becomes even more impressive in the N Line version with the 1.6-liter turbo engine producing 190 horsepower. It is complemented by a well-designed interior and an easy-to-use multimedia system. Fuel consumption could be better for all-wheel-drive models. On the other hand, the Kona has a significant advantage with its 5-year/100,000 km basic warranty.
