The best electric cars in 2023

Among all the electric cars launched by automakers, the Car Guide team has compiled a list of the best buys on the Canadian market.

There are different categories. So, let's take a closer look...

Small cars

Smaller, more affordable electric cars tend to be front-wheel drive only, with a focus on urban driving, but the majority still offer a very attractive range.

In our opinion, the Chevrolet Bolt EV (not to mention the Bolt EUV) offers the best price/range ratio on the market. In fact, its 65 kWh battery provides an official range of up to 417 km. The electric motor is rated at 200 hp. GM has corrected the high-voltage battery problem, making this a safe and reliable choice. It also boasts attractive technological integration and a 240V home charging socket.

As announced, however, the automaker has decided to cease production of the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Bolt EUV this autumn, in order to concentrate on the all-new Chevrolet Equinox EV, the first units of which are expected by the end of the year.

As alternatives, you should consider two Korean models, a Hyundai Kona electric or a Kia Soul EV first and foremost. However, you should be aware that the former is fully renewed for 2024, and the latter will not be back.

Compact and mid-size electric cars

Let's start with the Hyundai IONIQ 6, named New Car of the Year 2023 by the Car Guide, and Canadian Green Car of the Year 2023 by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC).

With its aerodynamic lines, the IONIQ 6 maximizes range to the point of 581 km in rear-wheel drive. The four-wheel-drive version develops 320 hp and 446 lb-ft of torque but still has a range of up to 509 km. Despite the steeply sloping roof, the interior remains spacious, not to mention the generous storage space.

Then there's the Polestar 2, which shines for its driving pleasure and typically Scandinavian design. Although prices have risen, Quebec customers are still entitled to full electric vehicle subsidies. Range ratings for the 2023 model are now 435 km for the entry-level front-wheel-drive version (single motor, 231 hp) and 418 km for the all-wheel-drive version (two motors, 402 hp; Performance Package: 469 hp). The BMW i4 and Tesla Model 3 are also very good options. The former for its excellent roadholding and build quality, the latter for its advantageous range, great roadholding and Supercharger network, of course.

Luxury electric cars

Finally, in our opinion, the Audi e-tron GT and the Porsche Taycan come out on top. They share the same platform and many of the same components. The sedan adorned with the four rings boasts an elegant and original silhouette, as well as a modern and refined interior. What's more, the RS version delivers exceptional performance and solid handling.

Its cousin has received several improvements and revisions for 2023. What catches the eye is the increase in range, accompanied by the possibility of recharging the battery at higher power for longer. The infotainment system has been enhanced with a more attractive interface, faster response times and wireless Android Auto integration.

Another German electric car, the Mercedes-Benz EQS, follows close behind, mind you. As for the Tesla Model S, which rounds out the podium, it continues to appeal to die-hard fans of the brand for much the same qualities as the Model 3.
