The 10 best plug-in hybrid SUVs for 2025

November 27, 2024 — Written by The Car Guide

Full-electric SUVs aren't for everyone. For many people, a plug-in hybrid SUV is a better alternative. The battery allows you to cover several dozen kilometers without burning fuel, but there's still a gasoline engine to avoid recharging on long trips.

Of course, you need to get into the habit of systematically plugging in the vehicle to maximize the time spent in electric mode. What's more, maintenance costs are high due to the combination of two types of motorization: electric and combustion.

Speaking of costs, plug-in hybrid models are eligible for government subsidies when their retail price is within the imposed limit. The federal subsidy is $5,000 when the electric range is equal to or greater than 50 km, otherwise it drops to $2,500. In Quebec, from January 1, 2025, the rebate will drop from $5,000 to $2,000 for models with a battery of at least 15 kWh, and from $2,500 to $1,000 for all others.

As of today, here are the top 10 plug-in hybrid SUVs for 2025, according to data available from Natural Resources Canada:

10. Lamborghini Urus SE

Lamborghini

Range: 56 km.

Base MSRP: $304,100

Nobody buys an Urus to save fuel, but rather to enjoy exceptional performance. Yet Lamborghini's SUV is now available only as a plug-in hybrid SE, beating the electric range of the Kia Niro PHEV and Sportage PHEV by 1 km.

9. Volvo XC60 T8

Range: 58 km.

Base MSRP: $59,950.

The electric range of Volvo's compact plug-in hybrid SUV is attractive, except that its fuel consumption in hybrid mode is a little less so. Its power (455 hp, 583 lb-ft of torque) and comfortable seats are also impressive.

8. Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid

Range: 60 km.

Base MSRP: $43,999.

Offering good road manners and an interesting level of technology, this Escape plug-in suffers from the absence of all-wheel drive, and its 14.4 kWh battery prevents it from qualifying for the full Quebec subsidy.

7. Lexus NX 450h+ and RX 450h+

Lexus

Range: 60 km

Base MSRP: $59,990 and $87,500, respectively.

Despite their different sizes and prices, these two Lexus models share the same powertrain and 18.1 kWh battery. They therefore boast identical power and range of 304 hp and 60 km. Their excellent reputation for reliability is not to be overlooked.

6. Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

Range: 61 km.

Base MSRP: $49,148.

The Outlander PHEV's electric range is advantageous, as is the possibility of plugging it into a DC rapid charging station, but this plug-in hybrid SUV consumes more fuel than the average once its battery is discharged. Please note: the 2026 model will gain in capacity and range.

5. BMW X5 xDrive50e
