North American Vehicles of the Year 2024: here are the winners
The winners of the North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle (NACTOY) of the Year 2024 awards were announced today at a press conference held jointly by the Detroit Automobile Dealers Association and the Automotive Press Association.
Once again, the jury was made up of 50 American and Canadian automotive journalists, including Marc Lachapelle, Antoine Joubert and Gabriel Gélinas from Le Guide de l'auto. The awards nomination process began with 52 eligible vehicles. The judges voted successively to determine 25 semi-finalists, then nine finalists, before arriving at the winners.
Evaluations are based on several criteria, including innovation, design, safety, performance, driving satisfaction, user experience and value. "Our winners reflect what a modern vehicle should be - a combination of style, utility and technology," says NACTOY President Jeff Gilbert. I congratulate our 50 jurors on their excellent choice."
North American Car of the Year 2024
Succeeding the Acura Integra, the new Toyota Prius (hybrid) and Prius Prime (plug-in hybrid) were acclaimed for their eye-catching styling and ever-efficient technology. The latter attracted particular attention with its total power of 220 hp and electric range of up to 72 km, enough to attract many new buyers.
With 192 points, Toyota's electrified compacts beat the Honda Accord (158 points) and Hyundai IONIQ 6 (150 points).
North American Utility Vehicle of the Year 2024
One year after the EV6, it's its big brother's turn to win the award in the utility vehicle category. The Kia EV9 seduced the jury with its price tag, far more affordable than other three-row electric SUVs on the market. It's a vehicle with a striking design and sophisticated interior that's enough to scare off the popular brands.
With 320 points, the EV9 beat two other Korean models, the Hyundai Kona/Kona Electric (98 points) and Genesis GV70 Electrified (82 points).
North American Truck of the Year 2024
Finally, Ford is crowned for the fourth year running in the truck category. After the F-150 in 2021, the Maverick in 2022 and the F-150 Lightning in 2023, it's the Ford Super Duty that takes the prize in 2024. The workhorse with the blue oval impresses with its towing and payload capacity, power and torque. Four engines are available, and comfort levels are outstanding. And let's not forget the many technologies that simplify the driver's life and tasks.
The Super Duty's 189 points put it ahead of a pair of representatives of the brand with the golden cross, namely the Chevrolet Colorado (163 points) and Silverado EV (148 points).
