New vehicles with the best resale value in 2025

Depreciation costs vehicle owners the most, so it's important always to consider the resale value at the time of purchase, as this helps determine the true cost.

To help consumers identify the new models that will sell best in three or four years, ALG, a J.D. Power division specializing in residual value calculations, has just announced the winners of its 2025 awards in Canada. Once again, initial quality, durability and brand reputation weigh heavily in the equation.

Leading brands such as Toyota and Lexus have shown that they can strategically upgrade or modify their vehicles while retaining elements that offer strong residual value,” points out Danny Battaglia, Managing Director for ALG at J.D. Power. In addition, the awareness and tactical approach of these major brands to trim level and powertrain pricing also helps to increase residual performance and provide long-term value to buyers in a competitive market.”

As well as looking at performance in the used car market, ALG takes into account the current competitiveness of vehicles and the situation of their respective brands. As there are differences between versions of the same model, an average is calculated based on their proportion within the range.

The 2025 winners

As in the past four years, the benchmark popular brand in Canada in 2025 is Toyota. Seven of its models have won ALG awards for best residual value. These are the Camry, 4Runner, Sequoia, Grand Highlander, RAV4, Sienna and Tundra. The Tundra has been number one among full-size light vans every year since the awards were introduced in 2009. A real safe bet!

Another dominant model is the Subaru WRX, which won an ALG award in the sports car category for the tenth year running.
