Used Volkswagen Golf: what should you watch out for?

In a previous article, we listed some of the reasons why this German compact hatchback is a good choice, but it's clear that it's not perfect. Golf has a reputation for uneven reliability, as well as a few problems that any potential buyer should be aware of.
In 2020, the Automobile Protection Association (APA) reported a major fault in Volkswagen's turbocharged engines: the relief valve on certain models wears out prematurely, causing the engine to malfunction. It has also been observed that this valve tends to corrode, causing the same problem. APA reports that this problem was common in 2015, and newer Volkswagen Golf, Jetta, and GTI models were equipped with 1.4, 1.8, or 2-liter turbo engines. Some examples have had the turbocharger system completely replaced, but not all, so it's worth checking.
Misfiring is not an uncommon occurrence, with many cases reported for 2016 models, even with low mileage. This has a direct impact on engine efficiency and performance. Spark plugs, coils, crankshaft position sensor and engine control module may be at fault.
Still, on the subject of the engine, Golf TDIs are certainly less attractive these days, given the bad press that diesel has received at Volkswagen and the more rigorous maintenance that the driver has to do, but reliability isn't too bad. Problems include a heat-cracked fuel filter valve.

Electronic glitches are also appearing on the back of the old Golf. These can be seen in various places, particularly in the controls, central screen and navigation system.
Finally, if you can afford it, an extended warranty can give you added peace of mind. You should also keep an eye out for safety recalls, of which there are quite a few for the seventh generation, on sale from 2015 to 2021.
