Used Nissan Frontier: What to know before buying?
Are today's new pickup trucks too expensive? You're not alone in thinking so. That's why many consumers are turning to used models.
In the mid-size pickup truck category, there is a wide variety of choices, and Japanese brands are just as good as their American rivals. Here, we'll focus on the Nissan Frontier. Remember, it was completely redesigned for the 2022 model year after a generation that lasted more than a decade and a half, from 2005 to 2020 (there was no 2021 model).
If you're mainly interested in the new Frontier, you should know that its V6 engine is powerful (310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque) but thirsty (12.3 L/100 km on average). It has proven to be reliable so far, having been around for several years without any major problems. The same goes for the chassis, which was stiffened when the generation changed but is still based on the old Frontier's.
On the technology front, however, it lags behind the competition, and Nissan has already experienced issues with the multimedia system. A recall has been issued for the 2022 Frontier models.
But what about older (and less expensive) Frontiers? Their durability and reliability have been proven by J.D. Power studies. In fact, have you heard the story of the American who drove more than 1.6 million kilometers in his Frontier?
However, the much older design results in a more basic cab and a less smooth ride than other midsize pickups. In addition, although there are several cab and bed configurations, as well as manual and automatic transmissions, the old Frontier also falls short in terms of power and capabilities. Its 4- and 6-cylinder engines (152 and 261 horsepower) are nowhere near as powerful as those found in GM models (193/200 and 302/308 horsepower), for example.
If there are any years to avoid, it would probably be 2005 to 2007. However, these Frontiers are hardly found on the used car market these days, so there's no need to worry. Conversely, the 2013 to 2015 models are often considered among the safest because they are less problematic.
Electrical issues, airbag problems (see recalls), and peeling paint (especially on 2012 models) are some of the issues reported with the Frontier. Have the vehicle you're interested in thoroughly inspected, then make sure all safety recalls have been addressed. You'll be able to buy with confidence and enjoy a vehicle that will serve you well for years to come.
