Used Acura TLX or Lexus IS: which one to choose?
Evolving in the shadow of their German rivals, the Acura TLX and Lexus IS remain for many a good choice when it comes to compact luxury sedans. Even more so when it comes to used cars, and reliability is part of the equation.
Are you hesitating between the two? That's normal, because these Japanese models are almost on an equal footing. What's more, each has been extensively redesigned for 2021 and looks great. To recommend one or the other, it's important to consider your specific needs.
The TLX is generally a little better equipped, more modern and slightly more spacious in the rear seats. Its trunk can also hold more luggage (382 liters vs. 306 liters). The IS is lighter and has more comfortable seats. Its interior is slightly better at blocking out outside noise.
Both cars are less than ideal when it comes to infotainment. Each has a touchpad on the center console that really doesn't help to operate the already user-unfriendly on-screen system. Yes, the IS's screen has also been touch-sensitive since 2021, but its remote positioning doesn't encourage use.
Under the hood, well, it all depends on the year and model. Before 2021, Lexus had the upper hand in terms of power, but Acura has since taken the lead with both its turbocharged four-cylinder and its V6. The latter can't match the V8 of the former (IS 500). On the other hand, and in general terms, it comes out on top with lower fuel consumption.
The safety arsenal and crashworthiness are equivalent (according to U.S. testing agencies). Ideally, test-drive both sedans over a short time to better appreciate their differences in road handling. We warn you: the Lexus sedan doesn't offer an optimal driving position, especially for the legs, but it does stand out with a rear-wheel drive version and a nicer sound if that's what you're looking for. However, when it comes to all-wheel drive, Acura's SH-AWD system gets top marks.
Finally, when it comes to reliability, neither inspires great fear. They shine in this respect. Lexus may have a slight advantage, not to mention a better reputation for the quality of its dealers' service departments, as shown by a J.D. Power Canada study. On the other hand, Acura has fewer safety recalls.
