Tesla Model 3 2018-2023: what to know before you buy?
The Tesla Model 3 compact sedan is a popular electric car in Quebec. It is available with a single motor and rear-wheel drive, or with two motors and all-wheel drive. And let's not forget the Performance version, which can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.3 seconds.
For 2024, Tesla has launched a Model 3 that has been modernized and improved on several levels, as The Car Guide found out during a test drive in March. What's more, its retail price has recently dropped below $50,000, making it even more attractive. But if you're here, you may be more interested in a used model. Here's what you need to know about the Tesla Model 3 2018 to 2023...
Before we go any further, and while we're on the subject of price, a search on Otogo.ca turns up several dozen used Model 3s. Generally speaking, prices range from around $27,000 for a car with just over 100,000 km on the odometer, to $45,000 for a more recent, better-equipped model with a longer range.
By the way, you can expect to cover 350 to 400 km with a single-engine Model 3, and 500 km or more with a twin-engine version - under optimal conditions, of course, because the reality is often a little different.
This brings us to the question: should we be concerned about the handling of a Tesla powered by winter? Well, like most electric cars, the Model 3 has a very low center of gravity due to the location and weight of the battery. As a result, the rear-wheel grip is far superior to that of a traditional gasoline-powered car. Of course, it's imperative to choose good winter tires, but if the road conditions to be faced are not too complex, there's no need to worry.
The Model 3 shines in terms of technology, but you need to be aware that almost all of the car's functions run through the 15-inch touchscreen. Over the years, Tesla has made various software fixes and updates - and continues to do so - to keep the systems in the most optimal state, which is a nice perk. This includes the Autopilot driving assistant which, despite what its name suggests, is in truth not sophisticated or reliable enough to allow hands-free driving without attention. Vigilance is still required.
The ride itself is synonymous with sportiness and efficiency, with responsive steering and sharp actions - ideal for weaving your way through traffic. On the other hand, creaking noises from the bodywork and glass roof are not uncommon, as are problems with the quality of assembly and finish - both inside and out. Check this out during your test drive. You should also be wary of rust and the state of the paintwork, especially at the bottom of the car. A protective film is highly recommended.
As for space, it's very generous in both rows and in the trunk, although the absence of a hatchback puts the Model 3 at a disadvantage compared to other competitors. Think of the Polestar 2 or even the Chevrolet Bolt EV. The front trunk under the hood is large enough (88 liters) to carry a few grocery bags or even a suitcase.
In closing, some twenty safety recalls affect the Model 3 2018 to 2023. Several of these required only a software update, but others targeted suspension and brake components, among others. You'll want to make sure that all patches have been applied to the one you're interested in by the previous owner or by a Tesla Service Center.
