Hyundai Kona 2018-2023: what to know before you buy?
Since its launch, the Hyundai Kona has been one of the best-selling SUVs in Canada, and especially in Quebec. Will the same thing happen with the new generation, which arrives for the 2024 model year? Let's bet on it.
That said, its design might not appeal to some. If that's your case, or if you're looking for a bargain used model instead, here's what you need to know in a nutshell about the 2018 to 2023 Hyundai Kona...
On the technical front, the outgoing Kona is powered by a 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated engine that develops 147 horsepower - a fair amount of power for this small crossover, and one that will also suit a majority of drivers. It's controlled by a six-speed automatic gearbox and routed to either the front wheels or all four.
The main alternative is a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine with 175 hp and, above all, 195 lb-ft of torque. Exclusively all-wheel drive, this is the Kona you need for a dose of fun, especially as the fuel consumption penalty is less than 1 L/100 km. Bear in mind, however, that the transmission is a dual-clutch type (seven speeds), and that its operation is not always optimal.
You may come across a used Kona electric vehicle. In this case, power (201 hp) and torque (290 lb-ft) are superior and fun to exploit, but the only drive wheels are at the front. The range of over 400 km in ideal conditions is also an advantage. Make sure your mechanical inspection is thorough, though. Some fifteen fires have been reported, including two in Quebec, due to a problem with the high-voltage battery. Hyundai has finally agreed to replace the battery for all models affected by the recall (2019 and 2020 models).
Otherwise, there's the high-performance Kona N, which appeared as a 2022 model. Harder to find, of course, and more expensive. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds, thanks to a 276 hp turbo engine. Do you have access to a racetrack near you? You could make the most of it. The snag is the eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox, which remains problematic here too. A recall has been issued.
In terms of equipment, the Essential versions are the most basic but still offer good value for money. These are followed by Preferred, Trend (a package that adds style), Luxe and Ultimate, the most opulent. The rear seats are cramped and uncomfortable, while the trunk holds just 544 litres. By lowering the backrests, the volume increases to almost 1,300 litres. There's more room in the category, of course.
New developments from 2022
The Kona has been given a facelift for 2022, with a sharper new front end and updated interior design. The six-speed automatic transmission has been replaced by a continuously variable Smartstream gearbox to reduce fuel consumption. In addition, the optional 1.6-litre turbo engine has been upgraded to 195 hp.
At the same time, the standard multimedia screen has been upgraded from seven to eight inches and made compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay wirelessly. In higher versions, it reaches 10.25 inches and also features a split-screen function and several Bluetooth connections. A resolutely modern 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster is located behind the steering wheel in some cases.
Finally, the Kona, like other Hyundai products, has experienced some reliability problems with the engine. For example, faulty oil scraper rings can lead to engine wear, abnormal noises and possibly a breakdown. Be warned.
In the end, this little SUV remains one of the best choices in its class, even used, so if the price is right and the inspection reveals no major problems, you'll be making a wise purchase.
