Does the Jeep Gladiator have any known major problems?
It's fair to say that Jeep has made a good decision in bringing back a pickup truck to its line-up. Launched for 2020, the Gladiator is certainly more expensive than other mid-size models on the market, but it's a nicer, convertible product that's resolutely focused on off-road driving - just like the popular Wrangler from which it derives.
But, like most Jeeps, the Gladiator is a risky buy because of its below-average reliability. A new one under warranty is one thing, but one that's 3 to 5 years old is quite another. The American magazine Consumer Reports has placed the Gladiator on its list of 60 used vehicles best avoided.
What are the main problems with Jeep's pickup truck? Let's start with a fairly long list of safety recalls, many of them mechanical, including the manual transmission and clutch, as well as the drive system. The automatic transmission is the preferred choice.
As for the engine itself, while the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 is great in terms of torque and fuel consumption, it has suffered a number of problems over the years, including fuel pump, injectors and filters. It's not surprising that Jeep has chosen to abandon it after the 2023 model year, in order to concentrate exclusively on the more proven and less problematic 3.6-liter V6 gasoline engine.
Following its launch, the Gladiator experienced problems with the electronic system that uncouples the front stabilizer bar under certain conditions. Water ingress could damage the circuit board that controls the system, so that the sway bar would not always connect when the button on the console was pressed. No recall was issued, but subsequent models no longer seem to have this problem, suggesting that Jeep has remedied the situation.
In addition, the Gladiator often fell victim to electrical and electronic bugs, such as faulty dials and indicators, or a sometimes recalcitrant multimedia system. Last but not least, there's the notorious “death wobble”, those violent jolts sometimes felt when driving at high speed which, contrary to what the expression suggests, have not caused any known fatalities. Beware of steering.
We recommend that you check the history of the used Gladiator you're interested in, and carry out a thorough mechanical inspection. It's also important to find out how much the vehicle has been abused by off-road driving, for example. Opt for an extended warranty if possible, and follow the maintenance recommendations religiously.
