Chevrolet Camaro 2016-2024: what to know before you buy?
As you know, the Chevrolet Camaro is drawing to a close, with production having ceased and no follow-up planned in the short term. However, General Motors has hinted that the Camaro story isn't over yet, so could we see it again with an electric engine or in some other form?
Instead of speculating, let's keep our attention on the sixth-generation Camaro (2016 to 2024), which is sure to attract used car buyers in need of their favorite Chevrolet coupe or simply a more affordable offering. Here's what you need to know about it...
Completely redesigned for 2016, the Camaro has lost size and weight compared to the fifth generation, thanks in particular to a new platform, but its cabin has remained just as spacious, whether in coupe or convertible format.
By the way, the trunk holds just 257 liters, and the convertible's is limited to a meager 206 liters. That's considerably less than in a Dodge Challenger or Ford Mustang, not to mention that rear visibility remains problematic, especially compared to a Mustang.
Engine options include a 275-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, a 335-hp 3.6-liter V6 and a 455-hp 6.2-liter V8, the latter in SS version. And let's not forget the ZL1 model with its supercharged 6.2-liter V8 spitting out 650 hp - a pinnacle in Camaro history (production models).
The gearboxes are either six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic. The latter has been the subject of class action suits in Quebec, Canada and the United States, due to its hesitation, jerking and vibration when changing gear on acceleration or deceleration. Low-speed problems have also been reported. Consider yourself warned.
A slight facelift took place for the 2019 model year, giving the car a new grille and a reworked rear end. However, the former was widely criticized, so Chevrolet decided to revamp the front end of the Camaro SS for 2020. You can see the change in the image.
In the same year, a 10-speed automatic gearbox became available with the V6. The equipment of the various versions has also been upgraded.
The Camaro received further changes to its range for 2021, starting with new colors and the addition of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. Then, the V8-powered 1LE Camaro gained in turn the 10-speed transmission.
Only four recalls have been issued for the 2016 to 2024 Camaro, and they mainly target the first two years. The main problem concerns the steering, which can suddenly stop working or suffer a loss of assistance due to corroded and broken bolts. Have the patches been applied to the model you're interested in?
Finally, the quality of assembly and finish sometimes leaves something to be desired. The rear seats are even more symbolic than the trunk. And if you're looking for a Camaro convertible to make the most of summer, be sure to have the roof and its mechanism inspected.
