Buying a roof box for your car: a few tips

Whether it's a growing family or a more active lifestyle, you may need more cargo space with your car or SUV. A roof box can be an interesting option, giving you much greater versatility. If you're already happy with the way your vehicle functions and drives, why replace it with a bigger one?

There are different sizes and types of roof boxes on the market... and at different prices! They range from a few hundred dollars to over $1,000. One thing's for sure: it's relatively easy to find one that's just right for your needs.

Hard or soft case?

If you've ever done a bit of research and shopping, you've no doubt wondered about the relevance, advantages and disadvantages that distinguish a rigid from a soft trunk. Obviously, your choice will be motivated and justified by the type of cargo you'll be carrying most of the time.

If you want to store fragile or valuable items in the trunk, you should definitely opt for a rigid, lockable model. The same goes for sports, outdoor or camping equipment that could get dirty or wet, as the interior of the trunk will be easier to clean. Longer models are also available for this type of equipment. Installation and handling are more complex, however, due to the weight and rigidity of the box.

Many consumers opt for a soft top box. Although less aerodynamic, it's easier to store and just as weather-resistant. What's more, it's more adaptable to your roof bars (side or transverse), thanks to straps that attach to different anchoring points. In fact, you don't even need bars: you can place a soft trunk directly on the vehicle roof (often, a protective mat is included in the purchase) and attach it to the passenger compartment by passing the straps through the doors. However, lighter loads are preferable.

Whatever your choice, it's important to know the trunk's maximum load capacity. Generally speaking, this varies from 50 to 75 kg. The same applies to the capacity of your roof racks or the roof itself. Refer to the manuals supplied.

Installation

Any roof box must be installed securely and safely, so that the load stays in place and doesn't affect driving. This is no time to be thinking "haywire", if you know what we mean! Ideally, of course, it should be attached to crossbars. In the case of a rigid trunk, you have no choice.

Installation should always be carried out by two people, for greater ease and assurance. If you do it yourself, the operation will be longer and certainly more arduous, although roof box manufacturers have greatly improved the user-friendliness and lightness of their models over the years.

Remember to load your equipment so that the weight is evenly distributed in the trunk, with heavier items in the middle. Use the straps and hooks inside to prevent items from shifting during transport. Finally, check that the trunk closes properly, and don't forget to lock it if necessary.

Happy shopping and adventures!
