Beware of these 10 vehicles with paint problems

Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, Tesla and Mazda are just some of the vehicle brands with well-documented paint problems, some of which have been the subject of class action lawsuits.

Nissan is another that's been the source of many complaints. Earlier this spring, The Car Guide spoke to the owner of a 2020 Rogue who, like others, has seen the paint on the front fenders peel off abnormally.

Although it's not a mechanical problem that can leave people stranded or compromise their safety, it's still annoying, especially when the warranty has expired.

10 vehicles to beware of

After analyzing its huge database and the comments of its members, the American website Consumer Reports recently published a new list of vehicles aged 10 years or less whose paintwork causes their owners the most headaches and expense.

“Unfortunately, when it comes to paintwork, the repair has to be done by a professional, and the job is often expensive if you have to pay out of pocket,” says Consumer Reports chief mechanic John Ibbotson.

So here's the unenviable list, starting with the vehicle with the highest rate of paint-related problems:

What to do with damaged paintwork?

As soon as paint problems start to appear (delamination, flaking, discoloration, swelling, etc.), take photos and follow up. Contact your dealer if the vehicle is still covered by warranty. Otherwise, turn to a body shop, which will be able to assess the problems and suggest various solutions to remedy them.

The best advice is to take care of the problem as soon as possible, to avoid further damage to the paintwork and even greater repair costs. And keep an eye out for recalls, extended warranties and class actions.
