Best winter tires 2023-2024: some suggestions
In Quebec, winter tires are mandatory on vehicles from December 1 to March 15, but of course, it's best to rely on the weather: as soon as the mercury dips below 7 degrees Celsius, it's time to install them. As we did last spring for summer and all-season tires, we're now going to take on the exercise of suggesting some of the best winter tires on the market for the coming season.
To this end, The Car Guide has researched and consulted various winter tire rankings for 2023-2024, both for cars and for small and medium-sized SUVs. Here are a few models to keep an eye on when shopping. Once again, we've identified just one tire per brand, to better reflect the range available.
Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10
An evolution of the Hakkapeliitta 9, the Hakkapeliitta 10 is by far one of the best winter tires on the market. Although expensive, its safety is hard to beat and its durability is very encouraging. It's available with studs for those who often have to tackle icy roads. In addition, the R5, which goes further than the excellent R3, is available for electric vehicles. For less, consider the Nordman 7, a discounted version of the previous-generation Hakkapeliitta.
Michelin X-Ice Snow
Claiming excellent cornering and braking results in both snow and ice, X-Ice Snow is a tire that offers formidable traction and arguably the best overall performance on dry and wet winter roads. Its other advantages include a comfortable, quiet ride and excellent longevity compared with the competition. In fact, it is guaranteed by Michelin for 60,000 km.
Bridgestone Blizzak WS90
Stable acceleration, efficient braking and a safe ride - that's what you get with the Blizzak WS90, one of the best sellers on the market. Compared to its predecessor, the Blizzak WS80, it is designed to improve responsiveness and tread life, allowing it to last a good season longer. Its greater road contact area and tread compound enhance performance on the ice.
Continental VikingContact 7
This top-of-the-range winter tire offers exceptional roadholding thanks to its optimum grip on snow and ice and remains supple despite the extreme cold. It is also renowned for its very short braking distances and reduced risk of aquaplaning. Its groove system allows water and slush to evacuate directly below the contact surface, enhancing driving safety.
Pirelli Ice Zero FR
Specially developed for the extreme winter conditions of northern countries like Canada, the Ice Zero FR is perfect for driving in deep snow, thanks to its aggressive tread pattern with 3D Butterfly technology and high siping density. This winter tire inspires confidence even when it's snowing heavily or there's a layer of ice underneath. You get the performance of a studded tire, without the studs.

Its tread is renowned for efficiently wicking away water and slush, while its multi-dimensional sipes and optional studs provide enhanced traction on ice and snow. In closing, we'd like to offer a few reminders. Firstly, price is only one factor to consider: grip (wet or dry), ride comfort, quietness and wear resistance are other aspects you need to consider. Often, it's better to pay more for a better-quality tire and take care of it. In this respect, it's best to avoid lesser-known, unproven discount brands.
Take the time to shop around tire retailers, whether on-site or online, and see what offers are available. Tire manufacturers also have their promotions. From one month or week to the next, things can change. A retailer might be open to negotiating or matching the price if you've found a cheaper deal elsewhere for the same model. Few consumers try this, but you may be surprised by the results.
