5 tips to save on vehicle maintenance

Maintaining your vehicle is becoming increasingly expensive due to the cost of parts and labor, but as the saying goes, prevention is better than cure. Negligence, which can lead to more damage and repairs, ends up increasing the bill.

What's more, in the vast majority of cases, properly maintaining your vehicle is financially more advantageous than buying a new one, especially in the current climate of high interest rates. That said, to help you make the most of your money, here are five tips to help you save money on the maintenance of your car, SUV or truck.

1. Find out about promotions and negotiate

Dealerships and mechanical workshops often have promotions and discounts for certain jobs, whether it's a simple oil change, injector cleaning, brake maintenance or other. Stay tuned and take advantage. And don't be afraid to plead your case, insisting that you're worried about your budget. Some places are more understanding and willing to negotiate because they want to keep their customers.

2. Visit the garages recommended by CAA

Are you a CAA member? In addition to consulting the list of garages recommended by the organization for the quality of their service and facilities (there are close to 350 across Quebec), you can obtain discounts when your vehicle is serviced. Specifically, you're entitled to 3% (up to $100) on all maintenance and repair work, including the cost of parts and labor, with the exception of tires.

3. Do business with parts retailers and go shopping

Take the example of a 12-volt battery at the end of its life. A parts dealer can test yours to see if it needs replacing and, if so, may even install the new one without charging for labor. It's a great way to save money instead of visiting a dealership or mechanic shop. Also, if you need a particular part, compare brands and search the web, especially Amazon.

4. Perform some maintenance yourself

Sometimes there's no need to go to the garage. Some maintenance jobs can easily be done at home. Replacing engine and cabin air filters, for example, is not rocket science. 5. Be proactive

At all times, pay close attention to the signals your vehicle sends you. Unwanted or abnormal noises and sensations, warning lights and messages appearing on the dashboard, suspicious smoke or heat, changes in the level or color of fluids in the various tanks under the hood, and so on. It's better to see sooner than later. In this respect, check your owner's manual regularly to make sure you never forget any recommended maintenance. It could save you costly repairs over time.
