5 symptoms of a transmission that needs to be repaired or replaced

In a previous article, we presented various tips and habits to adopt in order to properly care for a transmission and extend its life. As they say, prevention is better than cure, especially considering the high cost of repairs.

Drivers who neglect their transmission, particularly by not following the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule, run the risk of problems arising over time. Of course, no one is immune to certain defects or faults inherent in transmission parts.

In any case, it's important to always be on the lookout for abnormal behavior when driving a vehicle. Here are five examples. In all cases, an inspection is necessary.

1. Difficulty shifting gears

A transmission that has difficulty shifting gears is a rather frustrating problem that affects acceleration. This is obviously not something to be taken lightly. It may be that the transmission oil level is too low (a leak?) to generate the pressure needed for gear changes, that the gear lever cable is faulty, or that the problem is caused by the electronic control module.

2. Hesitant gear changes

An automatic transmission in good condition operates almost seamlessly. However, if gear changes are slow or hesitant, you will notice it fairly quickly. The vehicle's momentum becomes jerky. Once again, this is often due to the transmission fluid, which may be contaminated or insufficient. Fixing this should not be too difficult. That said, certain engine problems, mainly electronic, can prevent the transmission from shifting gears properly. A more thorough, and therefore more expensive, inspection may be necessary.

3. A transmission that “slips”

When you press the accelerator pedal and the engine speed increases, the expected response does not occur. What is happening with the transmission? In the case of a manual transmission, a worn-out clutch may be the cause. With an automatic transmission, it comes down to the transmission fluid. Internal wear on parts should also be checked, as should the operation of the torque converter.

4. Transmission fluid leak

Seeing stains or even a puddle of oil under the vehicle is unpleasant, but at least it's easier to diagnose than some of the problems mentioned above. A transmission fluid leak (typically reddish in color) is probably the cause. Remember to check the level in the reservoir and change the oil when it turns rusty or brown, before other more serious problems arise. It is also essential to ensure that the seals are watertight.

5. A burning smell

Finally, transmission oil that leaks or becomes contaminated can eventually wear out and damage parts, causing friction and overheating. This oil also has a distinctive smell when overheated. In addition, if oil leaks onto already hot engine parts, a fire could start under the hood, again producing a burning smell. There's no time to waste: you need to make an appointment with your mechanic as soon as possible. It's better to fix a leak than to replace an entire transmission!
