5 signs that your car may have a suspension problem

With the state of the roads in Quebec, vehicle suspensions have a hard time. It is impossible to avoid all the potholes, bumps, cracks and other imperfections of the road, even if you are careful.

As a result, it is common for repairs to be required in addition to the normal maintenance recommended by the manufacturer. And it's best not to wait too long to take care of it, or the damage could get worse. Here are five signs that your car may have a suspension problem...

1. Less comfortable ride

It is often the first thing you notice: the ride becomes harder, drier, not to say that it hits. You feel the impact of bumps and potholes more. The suspension can indeed be damaged. However, the tires should not be forgotten: are they well-inflated and still in good condition? In both cases, an inspection is recommended.

2. Knocking or squeaking noises

All sorts of vehicle components can make unwanted noises when they are damaged and not working properly, starting with the suspension components. Suspension compression and articulation are affected by wear and tear and misalignment. If you hear any suspicious banging or squeaking noises coming from underneath the car, it should be checked by a technician.

3. Pitching of the vehicle

If you notice that the roll is more pronounced than usual when negotiating turns, there is probably a problem with the suspension. Likewise, if you find that your vehicle leans to one side or the other when parked on a flat surface. A tip? Check the clearance between the tire and the fender at each corner: it should be the same everywhere.

4. Hopping or sagging

The suspension is designed to absorb shocks and changes in road amplitude. When components are in poor condition, you may experience abnormal hopping or front-end sagging, known as the dive effect. This is because the suspension has a harder time controlling weight transfers. When stopped, apply pressure to the bumpers: if the car seems to bounce a few times instead of stabilizing the first time, have the suspension inspected.

5. Vague or imprecise handling

Suspension is closely linked to steering. If it breaks down or wears out excessively, your car may have trouble keeping a straight line or cornering with precision. There are other reasons for this, of course. To be sure, an inspection is in order.

Finally, don't forget to check your owner's manual for the manufacturer's recommendations on suspension maintenance and parts replacement. And as always, prevention is better than cure!
