5 great used family vehicles for under $20,000
Do you have a small family but a limited budget for a new SUV or car? Don't worry, you've come to the right place.
Taking a look at the used car market, we've spotted several examples of interesting models for under $20,000 on Otogo.ca. In order to cater to different tastes and needs, here are five from various categories:
Toyota Sienna
Minivans are the family vehicle par excellence, and one of the sure-fire performers in this segment is, of course, the Sienna. For such an affordable model, you need to look to the first half of the older generation, i.e. 2011 to 2025. Don't let the high mileage scare you, this Toyota is capable of taking it in all directions.
With a cargo volume of up to 4,248 liters, the Sienna offered a 2.7-liter four-cylinder (187 hp) that you should forget. Whenever possible, opt for the 3.5-liter V6 (266 hp), capable of towing 3,500 lb if required. Some models also featured all-wheel drive.
Honda Pilot
Need three rows of seating without it being a minivan? A mid-size SUV like the Pilot will do the trick. As with the Sienna, you'll generally have to consider 2011 to 2015 models to stay within budget, but that's not a problem given the quality and reliability demonstrated by this great Honda.
The Pilot's interior can accommodate up to eight people. Its third row and load area are by far among the most spacious in its class. The squared-off silhouette and generous glazed area provide excellent visibility. As for the 3.5-liter V6, it's a proven, hard-working engine.
Subaru Crosstrek
The Crosstrek is a favorite among Quebecers and acclaimed by the automotive press, including The Car Guide, which has named it Best Buy among subcompact SUVs on numerous occasions. For the price mentioned, you'll find examples from the first years (2018-2019) of the previous generation, generally with 100,000 to 150,000 km on the odometer.
Despite its slightly underpowered engine (152 hp), it's a durable, versatile vehicle that's a pleasure to drive on roads, dirt tracks and snow. In addition to a surprisingly spacious second row, the Crosstrek boasts a 600-liter trunk and roof rails that facilitate the installation of racks.
Toyota Prius v
To save fuel, let's add a hybrid option to our selection. Toyota is a specialist in this field, so why not consider a Prius v? This wagon, derived from the Prius sedan, is ideal for parents with two children. For less than $20,000, you can find a 2016 or 2017 model in good condition, even with high mileage.
The Prius v stands out for its fuel consumption of less than 6 L/100 km. It's also worth noting that it develops just 136 horsepower. Meanwhile, its 971-liter trunk, with all seats in place, allows you to load a lot of gear. If required, by lowering the bench seat, the cargo volume practically doubles.
Nissan Maxima
For those who prefer a conventional car, a midsize sedan like the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord tops the list here, but have you considered the Maxima? Even more spacious, it will please your teenagers sitting in the back, while the person behind the wheel will appreciate the powerful 3.5-liter V6 producing 300 horsepower.
We've spotted various 2016 models (first year of the latest generation) with just under 100,000 km for under $20,000. The Maxima is reliable and inexpensive to maintain. What's more, its trunk capacity is just over 400 liters.
