3 mistakes to avoid for latecomers to winter tires
So you woke up this morning to the snow and were reminded that you still haven't installed your winter tires, despite the fact that Quebec law requires them on all light vehicles from December 1 to March 15 of the following year.
Not only could this compromise your safety, it could also hurt your wallet: a fine of $200 to $300 is imposed on drivers who fail to comply with these regulations. Of course, there are some exemptions.
We say it every year, but when it comes to winter tires, it's important to get a head start - in other words, not wait for the first snowflakes to arrive. This applies both to the purchase of new tires and to their installation. Latecomers run risks. Here are three mistakes to avoid in this situation:
1. Stretch your worn winter tires from another season
The fact that you're behind the December 1st deadline, and therefore illegal, shouldn't lead you to make hasty decisions or turn to an easy solution, such as installing your old winter tires that have probably served their purpose and hoping they'll be good until spring.
Look at the wear indicators and do the 25-cent test if necessary. The Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) stipulates that stud depth should never be less than 1.6 mm. Note that this is the minimum permitted by law: CAA-Quebec recommends a depth of at least 4.8 mm to ensure that the tread lasts through the winter.
2. Do not change all tires at the same time
It's also important to ensure that the tire's wear is even across its entire width, and that it's not too old. Generally speaking, the SAAQ points out that a tire manufactured more than five years ago begins to lose some of its qualities.
For various reasons, your tires may not all be worn evenly. Some drivers think they can just replace a few tires and save money, but this is certainly not an ideal solution, nor is it recommended. Driving with two brand-new winter tires and two more worn ones compromises handling and traction on slippery roads.
3. Buy the first or cheapest model you find
Holiday shopping is coming up and you don't want to dip into your budget? Fine, but that's no reason to buy the first discounted model that fits your vehicle or settle for the cheapest.
Even so, take the time to shop around at tire retailers, whether on-site or online, and see what offers are available. Tire manufacturers also have their promotions. Seek advice based on your car, SUV or van and your driving habits. Remember that it's often better and more cost-effective in the long run to choose more expensive, but higher-quality winter tires.
