3 cheaper alternatives to the Volkswagen Golf R

Many Volkswagen Golf fans in Canada have been missing their economical German compact ever since the automaker decided not to offer us the base version with the 8th generation, introduced for the 2022 model year. At least we still have the sporty Golf GTI and Golf R!

The problem is that both can be quite expensive, thank you - especially the latter, which has soared by $2,500 for 2023 and now exceeds $50,000 including the inevitable shipping and preparation costs. Are there more affordable alternatives? Of course, there are! In addition to an older-generation Golf, here are three cars to consider on the used market. Warning: available examples are quite rare.

Subaru WRX STI

Our subject's great rival, the WRX STI, has been off the market for two years (following the launch of the new WRX), which means that the former is even more coveted by performance enthusiasts. It has therefore gained in value, but it's still possible to find one for less than the price of a new Golf R. A 2019 model, for example, could be yours for around $40,000.

Mechanically, this feisty Japanese car is an equal contender, combining a 300-plus hp engine (305 or 310 depending on the model year) with a highly efficient all-wheel drive system, not to mention a six-speed manual gearbox. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds. Its flat-cylinder engine is a little less refined and the suspension is a little harder than the Golf R, however. And unless you find a 2014 or earlier model (good luck!), you'll have to do without the hatchback and make do with a sedan... with a small or large spoiler.

Honda Civic Type R

Here's another one whose price has risen sharply with the new generation. However, the first Civic Type R offered in Canada from 2017 to 2021 now represents a (slightly) more affordable alternative. It's possible to find one for under $45,000. Of course, not everyone will like its very aggressive, even delinquent design, but to save a few thousand dollars and not wait months for delivery, it may be worth it.

In truth, the Civic Type R is one of the best sports cars of the new century. Possibly the best of them all, dollar for dollar. The fact that it can also carry four passengers in comfort, with a fair amount of luggage, makes the feat even more impressive. The 306 hp of its turbo engine are all channelled to the front wheels, unfortunately, but at least the torque effect is well controlled.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution

Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi discontinued the Lancer sedan at the end of the 2017 model year, and the prodigious Evolution (Evo to its friends) performance version in 2015. This four-door bombshell, derived from rally cars like the WRX STI, was also close to 300 hp (291 to be exact) and featured excellent all-wheel drive for optimum control in summer and winter.

Forget comfort aboard the Lancer Evolution. The suspension provides excellent handling, and you'll feel every bump in the road. However, few cars at this price deliver as much fun on the road as they do on the track. By the way, a well-maintained 2013 or 2014 model, for example, can sell for less than $30,000, which is very attractive.

In any case, check the maintenance history and any modifications that may have been made to the car, then have it inspected by a trusted technician to anticipate which parts need replacing and avoid unpleasant surprises. And if you'd like another suggestion for a more affordable model than a new Golf R, consider a Ford Focus RS.
