2018-2024 Volkswagen Tiguan: What should you know before buying?
The Volkswagen Tiguan has entered its third generation as a 2025 model, following the one marketed from 2018 to 2024. It is precisely the older older Tiguan that we will focus on here, in order to help those who are shopping for a used compact SUV.

First, this second Tiguan has gained a lot of volume compared to the original, to the point of being nicknamed “Groguan” by our colleague at The Car Guide, Antoine Joubert. Its interior is more spacious than average, and some models even feature a third row of seats, which is rare in this category (and absent in the new Tiguan). Obviously, this row is mainly used for short distances.
In terms of cargo space, it's one of the most capable compact SUVs, with a trunk that measures 1,065 liters in most cases and expands to 2,081 liters when the second-row seats are folded down. It's worth noting that the seatback is split 40/20/40, which maximizes transport possibilities. Roof rails make it easy to install racks, while towing capacity is 1,500 lb.
The same heart
The only engine powering all versions of the 2018 to 2024 Tiguan is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Its 184 horsepower is backed by an impressive 221 lb-ft of torque. In addition, while some front-wheel-drive Tiguan models were available through 2021, 4MOTION all-wheel drive has been standard ever since.
The 2022 model year brought a mid-cycle update to this generation of the Tiguan. The company has nicely redesigned the front and rear bumpers, headlights, taillights and grille. Inside, the most significant change was the new version of Volkswagen's multimedia system. Popular features such as a digital dashboard, panoramic roof and Fender audio system may well be found in the models you come across.
Incidentally, the range consists of three main versions: Trendline, Comfortline, and Highline. The latter is the most fully equipped and refined. An R-Line package enhancing the style and equipment has also been offered.
Reliability and price
The 2018 to 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan can be criticized for its relatively noisy engine, less-than-dynamic driving (ride comfort wins out), above-average fuel consumption, and sometimes jerky transmission behavior. In addition, its reliability issues are well known, and the list of safety recalls issued for it exceeds 20, which requires caution on the part of buyers and a thorough mechanical inspection before signing anything. An extended warranty is also worth considering if your budget allows.
The Tiguan has had its share of teething problems. The 2018 model suffered from hesitant or jerky acceleration, as well as transmission and oil consumption issues. The brakes also tended to wear out prematurely, but these have inevitably been replaced since then. Complaints abound on CarComplaints.com, and Consumer Reports gave it a reliability rating of 1 out of 5, recommending that consumers avoid it. You should also be aware that there were 10 recalls in 2018. The suspension, electrical systems, airbags, and seat belts may be defective in some cases.
Finally, in terms of price, expect to pay at least $15,000 for a model in good condition with reasonable mileage. Recent, high-end used Tiguan models usually range from $35,000 to $40,000, including certified models. Happy shopping!
