Kia Seltos 2024: even better

Introduced in 2020, the Seltos quickly made a name for itself, becoming not only one of the most popular compact SUVs, but also the best-selling Kia model in Canada. And it's worth pointing out that these successes have been achieved in a crowded vehicle category where there are a dozen competitors.

But as we've seen over the years, this manufacturer is far from resting on its laurels, and to maintain this model's sales success, in 2024 it has undergone cosmetic modifications and mechanical refinements, while increasing the level of standard equipment, particularly in terms of electronic safety accessories.

A more aggressive look

Of course, a revised and improved version cannot exist without changes to its presentation. While the first edition was elegant, it lacked visual pizzazz. This has been largely remedied this year. The front grille and bumper have been redesigned to give it a more aggressive look. Top-of-the-range models also feature LED high beams. The changes are more pronounced at the rear, with large, square brake lights. And let's not forget the arrival of the X-Line version, whose exterior styling tends to reinforce its off-road silhouette. Even if its vocation is also urban.

In the cockpit, the most striking visual feature is the rectangular central screen, combined with the instrument cluster on the far left. Each screen is 10.25 inches long. In doing so, Kia is imitating the more luxurious models that have adopted this technology. More economical versions feature a 4.2-inch display screen and an 8-inch central screen. The touch screen is easy to read and navigate.

Almost identical motorization

As with all overhauled models, the mechanics have also undergone a number of modifications. Firstly, the suspension has been slightly modified to optimize handling and comfort.

As before, two engines are available. On the more economical versions, the 2-liter 4-cylinder now produces 147 hp and 132 lb-ft of torque. It has gained one horsepower. It is mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

On the SX and X-Line versions, a 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 195 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque delivers decent performance. It is mated to a conventional 8-speed automatic gearbox, which differs from the dual-clutch transmission previously offered.

More equipment

These aesthetic and mechanical changes are combined with a more generous content offering than before. Front collision avoidance, lane keeping and blind spot collision avoidance systems are all standard. Finally, Kia also offers a rear cross-collision avoidance system, as well as safe exit assistance systems to prevent the rear-seat passenger from opening the door while another vehicle or cyclist is approaching.

Other noteworthy features include a touchless electric tailgate and, of course, the digital key that lets you use your smartphone to unlock the doors.

Finally, what may seem the ultimate gadget to some is the Sound Night Lamp. This accessory manages lighting effects that change to the sound of the music. It may seem a must-have at first, but I'm sure you'll tire of it in the long run.

Uncompromising comfort

Perhaps this urban SUV lacks a little character in the cabin. Again, this is a matter of individual perception. On the other hand, it's easy to see that the use of certain materials is based on a desire to reduce costs. On the other hand, interior roominess is good, and cargo space is fairly generous for the class. It's roomier than the Chevrolet Trailblazer, but a little less than the Hyundai Kona.

In an ideal world, it would be fantastic if all versions of the Seltos were powered by the 1.6-liter turbo engine. Its performance is much more responsive, and the automatic gearbox does a good job. As for the naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter engine, it acquits itself quite well when the vehicle is not heavily loaded. However, when pushed too hard, its sound is noisy and the CVT transmission struggles to cope.

But in urban and everyday driving, performance is adequate, while the steering is sufficiently precise. All-wheel drive is standard on SX and X-Line models, and optional on other models.

All in all, it's easy to see why this vehicle has become so popular in just a few years. It's fully equipped and has been upgraded for 2024, while the ride is devoid of surprises and overall comfort is good.

In fact, if there's anything to be said for it, it's that the fuel consumption of either engine is not exemplary. In both cases, the average is higher than that of many competitors. But still, depending on driving style, fuel consumption can be considered reasonable from all points of view.

In conclusion, the Seltos is a small urban SUV that offers a lot and whose popularity has not been usurped.
