Don't Forget to Check the Tires When Buying a Used Car!

You’ve been shopping for a used vehicle and finally found a good candidate that matches your needs and budget. If it hasn’t been inspected or certified by the dealer before being put up for sale, or if you just want a bit of extra confidence before buying, it’s your duty to have it checked by someone you trust.

Some people don’t pay attention to them, but the tires are a crucial part of a good inspection. Did you know that the way they are worn can tell you a lot about the vehicle’s mechanical condition? As a matter of fact, if they're worn unevenly, chances are it’s the result of mechanical issues, failed suspension or steering components, or even bad wheel alignment. Improper air pressure can also be a culprit.

In any event, don’t just test the tires by giving them a little kick and calling it a day. What’s needed here is a real good look! If needed, ask a friend, a parent or an expert for some advice.

Inspecting the tires will show you how much they are worn, and how much life remains in them. Naturally, your safety on the road is a good reason for this, but as a buyer, you also want to know if they’ll need replacement soon. If so, you can use that information to negotiate the price, or make a budget that includes the purchase of new tires.

This is even more relevant in our current context. First, the supply could be difficult for some tire categories, sizes, or brands. “There should be enough winter tires for everyone, but motorists who want a particular model should play safe and reserve theirs with their dealer now”, says CAA-Quebec automobile expert Jesse Caron.

Then, if you must buy tires and have them installed on your vehicle, make an appointment as soon as possible. Fall is a busy time for dealerships and mechanical workshops. With reduced staff sometimes (you’ve heard about labour shortages, right?), a couple weeks early will be better than too late.
