Wayne Gretzky's former Rolls-Royce Corniche IV goes up for auction
Wayne Gretzky saw his NHL record of 894 goals broken by Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals last Sunday. Now we learn that one of his old cars will soon be auctioned off under the supervision of RM Sotheby's.
And not just any Rolls-Royce Corniche IV 1994, which Gretzky received as a gift from the Los Angeles Kings a few days after scoring his 802nd career goal and breaking Gordie Howe's previous record. It was on March 30, 1994, at a special ceremony held at center ice before a game against the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.
"I feel a little embarrassed to be receiving this car tonight. It's beyond me, but I'm going to take it!" the Wonder told the crowd at the time.
If you've never heard of the Corniche, you should know that Rolls-Royce produced just 219 examples of the fourth generation, marketed from 1992 to 1995. The prestigious English convertible featured a 6.75-liter V8 engine mated to a four-speed automatic transmission.
The story doesn't go on to say how much Gretzky drove his, which sports “Goal 802” lettering, but the odometer reads 9,107 miles, the equivalent of 14,656 km. Various people traded it in from 2016, and a full service was carried out by the original Beverly Hills dealer in the summer of 2024, followed by a cosmetic restoration, so that today the car is in magnificent condition, always ready to roll.
Elegant black bodywork is embellished with fine wine-red stripes, chrome mirrors and a tinted windscreen. Inside, black leather contrasts with walnut wood trim and gray retractable roof lining.
According to RM Sotheby's, this 1994 Rolls-Royce Corniche IV once owned by Wayne Gretzky could be worth some C$1.2 million. However, it will be sold without reserve and may not fetch such a sum.
