Wayne Gretzky's former 2006 Ford GT goes up for auction
As the final Stanley Cup series gets underway with the team that propelled Wayne Gretzky to glory, the Edmonton Oilers, one of the cars that once belonged to La Merveille also finds itself in the spotlight.
You see, after the Rolls-Royce Corniche he received as a gift in 1994, it's now the turn of his 2006 Ford GT to find itself up for auction, this time on the online platform Bring a Trailer.
The GT was first resurrected in 2005-2006. This one, one of only 343 Heritage Edition examples produced at the time, sports the iconic Gulf pale blue and orange livery in tribute to the GT40s that raced and won the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1968 and 1969. The racing number on the flanks, naturally, is the legendary 99 worn by Gretzky throughout his professional career.
The car has been driven very little, its odometer reading just 1,226 miles (1,973 km). It is currently in Atlanta, Georgia.
A supercharged 5.4-liter V8, combined with a six-speed manual gearbox and helical limited-slip differential, delivers 550 hp. Torque is rated at 500 lb-ft, for acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in around three and a half seconds.
Also of note are the magnificent BBS forged aluminum wheels, powerful Brembo brakes, thundering dual exhaust and black leather interior with air conditioning.
We're very curious to see the outcome of the auction, which closes on June 6. The value of this generation of Ford GTs has been on the rise for some time, but none has ever been owned by anyone other than Wayne Gretzky. The highest bid at the time of writing was $625,000 US, equivalent to $856,000 Canadian. Check out the photo gallery at the top of the page to see more of the car.
