Elvis' “Guitar Car” resurfaces in France and is for sale
There are custom-built cars, and then there are real fantasy cars. One of the most spectacular in history, the “Guitar Car” designed for the king of rock ‘n’ roll, Elvis Presley, is in the news today.
After having disappeared for decades, the car has just resurfaced on the eBay auction site, where we learn that it’s located... in Orléans, France! It’s listed at 10,000 euros (15,785 Canadian dollars), but at the time of writing, no bids had been placed yet. The sale will end on Saturday, and the best offer will be accepted.
For the record, Elvis drove it to one of his Las Vegas shows during his glory years. Its creator, Jay Ohrberg, is the same man behind Back to the Future's DeLorean, Sheriff Scare Me's General Lee, K2000's KITT, several Batmobiles and many other famous Hollywood vehicles.
The original car was a 1970 Cadillac Eldorado. Cut in half, then reinstalled on a bespoke extended chassis, the car received a rear-end makeover to resemble a guitar. To top it all off, the entire body was painted candy pink.
Strangely, what used to represent the guitar's fingerboard and frets is absent from the images accompanying the ad. According to the ad, the car is not roadworthy, suggesting that the 8.2-liter V8 under the hood and many other parts are in need of major maintenance.
In short, the buyer may have to spend a small fortune restoring Elvis's “Guitar Car”. Oh, and since it's 12.5 meters long, it goes without saying that transportation is another good challenge in itself. With the 50th anniversary of the King's death just over two years away, there's plenty of time to get started.
