Quebecers unite for the world's longest Ford Mustang convoy
The 60th anniversary of the iconic and legendary Ford Mustang is an occasion to celebrate in style... and in numbers. That's what hundreds of Quebecers, Canadians, Americans and even French did on Sunday, taking part in the longest Mustang convoy in history.
Some 2,100 enthusiasts had registered, and just a little fewer took to the starting line at the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières on their way to the Centre Vidéotron in Quebec City. The exact total number of cars on Highway 40 at cruising speed and under police escort was officially 1,889.
The previous record of 1,326 Mustangs was set in 2019 at Lommel, Belgium, with the support of Ford of Europe.
Passionate Quebecers
This time, it was local Mustang enthusiasts who took matters into their own hands just over a year ago, in particular Sylvie Provencher, president of the Club Mustang Rive-Nord, and Alain Cayuela, honorary member of the Club Mustang Montréal 1994. With the help of a few invaluable acolytes, they approached a dozen Mustang owners' and enthusiasts' clubs with a view to setting a new record.
At the invitation of Club Mustang Mauricie, a large gathering was held on Saturday in the parking lot of the Centre Les Rivières in Trois-Rivières. Convoy participants were then instructed to prepare for departure between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. on Sunday.
Despite the colossal logistical challenge, the organizers were delighted with the smooth running of the event, including the arrival in Quebec City on the sidelines of the 53rd Salon Auto Sport. The first cars showed up just before 9 a.m. and continued until around midday.
On site, after a blessing of the Mustangs, the drivers received their certificates confirming their participation in the record-breaking convoy.
No two alike
The Car Guide was able to talk to many of them and, above all, see the variety of Mustangs gathered near the Centre Vidéotron. Coupés and convertibles representing each of the seven generations, painted in all colors and many having benefited from various restorations or modifications, formed the spectacular tide of pony cars. Our favorite? Possibly this Mustang Shelby GT350, very similar to that of the late driver Ken Miles, which sold for the equivalent of $5.2 million in 2020.
An ephemeral record?
Sunday's achievement is sure to be one of the highlights of the year, and of the Ford Mustang's 60th anniversary. Sylvie Provencher is proud of it... and relieved, after all those months of work.
