Mercedes-Benz delivers its first electric popemobile to Pope Francis
Continuing a tradition that dates back to 1930 with Pope Pius XI, Mercedes-Benz has just delivered its latest executive car to Pope Francis. Once again, it's a G-Class SUV, but unlike those of the last 45 years, this one is all-electric.
For the first time, the iconic German luxury SUV is available in a battery-powered variant, the G 580 with EQ technology. This is perfect for the company's main concern, which is to promote respect for the environment and sustainable development.
The bespoke papal vehicle was developed in close collaboration with the Vatican. Like its predecessors, it is painted in classic pearl white on the outside. The roof has been removed at B-pillar level, and the B-pillar itself has been harmoniously integrated into the side wall to create a unique profile.
In the event of rain or adverse weather conditions, a separate hardtop roof offers protection for the Holy Father and his attendants. The left-hand rear door was removed, then rebuilt in one piece in a traditional style and seamlessly welded into the bodywork. On the right-hand side, the rear door hinges were moved to the opposite side.
At the rear, the bench seat has been replaced by a single, centrally-positioned, height-adjustable seat. This swivelling main seat allows flexible movement and the ability to address an audience from different angles. Behind, two individual seats face each other.
As Mercedes-Benz points out, the electric motor is well suited to the particularly low speeds required for Pope Francis' public appearances. The year 2025 will also be marked by the Jubilee, an event that only takes place every 25 years and for which millions of pilgrims are expected in Rome.
It's a safe bet that the 579 hp and 859 lb-ft of torque from the four engines - the same ones that accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds - won't be of much use. By the way, the range is 473 km according to the WLTP cycle used in Europe, and 385 km according to Natural Resources Canada.
