The best electric SUVs over $50,000 in 2025
The number of electric SUVs and crossovers has grown considerably in recent years. As a result, it's not always easy for consumers to make an informed choice. Especially since the end of the federal rebate, the pause in the provincial rebate and the current turmoil in the automotive industry are adding to buyers' uncertainty.
So, what are the best buys for Canadian consumers this year? The Car Guide team takes a closer look and reveals the models that occupy the top three positions in the category.
1- Kia EV9
The Kia EV9 has made a remarkable arrival among electric SUVs, taking direct first place on our 2025 list. It is the first SUV to offer three rows of seats at a relatively affordable price. Available with two different batteries (76.1 or 99.8 kWh), the vehicle's range varies from 370 to 489 km, depending on the version chosen. The Light and Wind models are rear-wheel drive, while the EV9 Land, Premium and GT-Line are all-wheel drive. The latter are obviously best suited to our winters, although we were positively surprised by the rear-wheel-drive models fitted with good winter tires.
With power ranging from 201 to 215 hp, rear-wheel drive models are less lively under acceleration, especially when loaded. But if devilish performance isn't one of your priorities, their well-placed price tag is worth considering.
Finally, we also really appreciated the interior. The generous space and excellent ride comfort are invaluable assets for families looking for a practical, quiet and ergonomic vehicle. For all these reasons, we decided to place the EV9 at the top of our ranking this year.
Even if they have been dethroned by the EV9, the two Korean cousins will still be a safe bet in 2025. Technically, the two vehicles are very similar, with similar range and performance. In 2025, the IONIQ 5's battery capacity rises to 84 kWh, the vehicle receives a few cosmetic tweaks and, above all, a rear windscreen wiper! A welcome addition that corrects one of its main shortcomings. At Kia, we also note a slight aesthetic revision, the addition of the same battery, a modernized multimedia system and compatibility with Tesla's fast charging stations.
The main difference this year is the arrival of a high-performance version at Hyundai (IONIQ 5 N) and its disappearance at Kia (EV6 GT). Whichever model you choose, the IONIQ 5 benefits from better passenger space and headroom, which can be more advantageous for family use.
For the rest, these are two very competent crossovers that offer good performance in summer and winter, with a range that can exceed 500 km. Their fast recharging capability (up to 240 kW) is also an important factor in recovering a lot of range in a short space of time.
The start-up was chaotic, but after an overhaul of the electrical system, the Blazer EV finally made its debut on the market. A vehicle that stands out for its spacious interior and comfortable ride. As always with GM, the multimedia system interface has been well thought out, and the presence of real buttons under the screen means that everything can be manipulated without taking your eyes off the road. Our main criticism is the absence of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, features that are highly appreciated by consumers. Instead, Chevrolet has opted for a system provided by Google.
Performance-wise, there are front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. The rear-wheel drive Blazer EV develops 365 hp and boasts the best range in the range (538 km). The most powerful is the sporty SS model, with 615 hp.
