The best electric crossovers under $50,000 in 2025

The best electric crossovers under $50,000 in 2025

Given the variety of electric SUVs and crossovers now available in Canada, The Car Guide has chosen to categorize them by price when determining its recommendations.

So, of all the models on the market in 2025 with a starting price under $50,000, our team has compiled a list of the best buys.

1. Hyundai Kona électric

If your budget doesn't allow for an IONIQ 5, Hyundai offers its second-generation electric Kona, which is packed with qualities and earns our favor in this category. The absence of all-wheel drive and the significant drop in torque following the 2024 redesign will hold back some buyers, of course, but with a competitive range of 420 km, precise steering and a serene ride, the driving experience proves satisfying.

The interior is well laid out and practical, and there's plenty of room for cargo, with a 723-liter trunk that expands to 1,803 liters when the bench seat is folded. An additional 27 liters of storage space can be found under the hood.

Hyundai's good equipment/price ratio and advantageous warranty are also worth mentioning. Trend, Ultimate and N Line packages are available, except that the latter two push the pre-tax bill beyond the $50,000 mark.

2. Chevrolet Equinox EV

The Equinox EV can thank its big 85 kWh battery for a range of up to 513 km in front-wheel-drive configuration. Unlike the other two contenders here, it offers optional all-wheel drive (but for more than $50,000), which increases power from 213 to 288 hp while providing a range of 459 km.

Quite simply, its price and equipment are similar to those of the Kona Electric, while its performance could be compared to that of the IONIQ 5. Its fast-charging capacity is also superior (150 kW), and the interior shines with its 17.7-inch touchscreen.

On the other hand, the larger-diameter wheels have a negative impact on ride comfort and energy consumption. And despite being longer than our number one, the Equinox EV boasts a smaller total load volume of 1,620 liters, especially as no storage space is hidden beneath the long snout.

3. Kia Niro EV

Kia

Rounding out our podium at an even more affordable price, the Niro EV shares much in common with its Hyundai cousin, including the motor, battery and traction-only drivetrain. Its official range is slightly less, at 407 km, but it too is highly energy-efficient on the road. During our tests, we were easily able to improve on the rating announced by Natural Resources Canada.

Yes, the extra weight over the Niro Hybrid is considerable, and maximum torque isn't as generous, but it's delivered more immediately and the center of gravity is lower, balancing out the ride. Inside, the layout is well thought-out, and we like the way the screens are nicely integrated into the dashboard.

Watch out: Kia will strike back in early 2026 with the EV3, a condensed version of the larger EV9 with more advanced features and technologies than the Niro EV.
