Mistakes to avoid in hazardous road conditions
Winter weather conditions can make for chaotic conditions on the roads. Over the course of the season, you may have seen numerous traffic accidents and undesirable situations in which motorists have unfortunately found themselves. In order to ensure safe travel, it is important to be aware of various mistakes to avoid.
1. Poor assessment of road conditions
Keep in mind that in winter, a roadway that looks clear is not necessarily so. It may be covered with black ice. You must take as much care as when the road is covered with snow if no abrasive has been applied. Unfortunately, despite the presence of winter tires, the dangers are there and a wrong assessment can make you lose control of your car.
If you lose control, stay calm and keep your hands on the wheel. To have a chance of getting out of the skid, it is important to stay in control of your vehicle and keep your eyes open. Look where you are going. As soon as possible, shift the transmission into neutral. Then try the countersteer technique. This involves turning the wheels in the opposite direction to where you are skidding.
2. Hit the road without planning
When the weather does not look good, it is important to plan your outing. Check the forecast and pay attention to the warnings in effect.
3. Snow and ice removal
In order to maximize your visibility and that of other motorists, you must ensure that your car is completely cleared of snow. A layer of snow left on the roof and on the hood could fly off and cause accidents. You should also make sure that all your windows, windshield and rear window are clear of snow.
4. On the road
When road conditions are unfavorable, you should use main roads whenever possible. Reduce your speed, but increase the distance between you and other vehicles. Do not overtake if the roadway is not clear.
