How to avoid pothole damage
We'll soon know the results of CAA-Quebec's 9th annual Worst Roads campaign, but those that stand out are just the tip of the iceberg: just 56% of the upper road network is said to be in “good condition” according to the Quebec Infrastructure Plan 2023-2033.
In fact, the province fares poorly compared to the rest of the country. A CAA study conducted in 2021 revealed that poor road conditions cost Quebecers an average of $258 per vehicle per year, more than double the Canadian average ($126).
More specific examples? Here's a list of the parts most often damaged by potholes, along with their replacement cost (labor costs not included):
- Tires: $150 to $350
- Steel wheel: $100
- Alloy wheel: $600
- Suspension arms: $200 to $400
- Steering knuckle: $100 to $250
- Shock absorber: $200 to $400
- Strut: $200 to $400
- Suspension ball joint: $150 to $300
- Wheel alignment: $100 to $200

Some damage can be repaired, but this is not always the case. One thing's for sure: it's best to take care of the damage as soon as possible, not only to maintain safe driving but also to avoid even more costly work in the long term.
Better safe than sorry
So how can you avoid damage to your vehicle caused by potholes? Staying focused on the road and knowing how to get around them is obviously the best thing, but you already knew that. On this subject, beware of puddles, which can hide a hole of unknown depth.
If a pothole is unavoidable, try to slow down as much as possible, then release the brakes at the very last moment. The idea is to reduce the force of the impact and avoid transferring too much weight forward, which would amplify the stress on the vehicle's components.
There are also things you can do before you even hit the road. Making sure your tires are properly inflated is one of them, which will make it easier to withstand the impact of a pothole. So check your air pressure regularly and adjust it if necessary.
Preventing damage also involves proper vehicle maintenance. In particular, have wheel alignment inspected at the same time as your seasonal tire change. If any corrections need to be made, don't put them off, as potholes could exacerbate the problem. The same applies to the suspension.
