Used Audi Q5 or Mercedes-Benz GLC: which to choose?
The Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLC are two of the country's most popular compact luxury SUVs. The latter gave birth to a new generation in 2023, but if you're here, it's because you're interested in pre-owned models.
To help you see things more clearly, here's a little comparison between these German rivals. In the case of the Q5, we'll focus on the current generation launched in 2018. For the GLC, it will be the one marketed from 2016 to 2022.
First of all, there's no shortage of choice with either Audi or Mercedes-Benz. Each of these SUVs is available in classic or coupe format (called Sportback when we're talking about the Q5), and has offered several engine options. Their 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinders are almost identical in terms of power and torque, but strangely enough, the GLC's is no more fuel-efficient, despite a gearbox with nine gears instead of seven.
Then there are the sportier SQ5 and AMG GLC 43 versions. Again, the figures are very similar, each employing a 3-liter turbo V6, except from 2020 onwards when the latter climbed to 382 hp and built up a lead in the 0-100 km/h sprint. Want more? Audi has nothing else to offer, but Mercedes-Benz has its AMG GLC 63 version, whose 4-liter twin-turbo V8 generates no less than 503 hp. When it comes to performance, you're in for a treat!
On the other hand, don't forget that the Q5 and GLC also offer plug-in hybrid variants. It's almost impossible to tell them apart, however, since electric range (nearly 40 km) and hybrid fuel consumption (around 9 L/100 km) are equivalent. The GLC has a slight advantage, given its prodigious torque of 516 lb-ft.
Now, if we look at their interiors, Audi has always been a benchmark in this respect, especially in terms of finish quality, but its compatriot is almost on a par with it. Even the screen layout and control ergonomics are similar. As for the decor, that's a matter of taste. What's certain is that the Q5's trunk is considerably larger... with the rear seatbacks up. Otherwise, the GLC is capable of carrying a little more cargo. Do you have children or not?
Finally, when it comes to reliability, both Audi and Mercedes-Benz are below the industry average, according to studies by J.D. Power. Similarly, the Q5 and GLC of the years in question generally score 2 out of 5 from Consumer Reports. The former has undergone 17 safety recalls in six years, compared with - brace yourself - 42 for its rival. A rigorous pre-purchase inspection is crucial, and an extended warranty is highly recommended if your budget allows. Take the time to test-drive each vehicle.
