Infiniti G37 or BMW 3 Series Coupe: Which One is Best?
Used vehicle prices have skyrocketed over the last two years. A reader recently shared with us his desire to acquire a luxury sport coupe, and said he was considering older models to save on the purchase price. To be more precise, he had a keen interest in either the Infiniti G37 or the BMW 3 Series coupe.
Remember that these two cars were replaced in 2014 by the Q60 and the 4 Series respectively. Which one would be the best choice?
First of all, both have four seats, which are far more enjoyable at the front than at the back. The Japanese offers slightly more room inside the cabin, but the German counters this with a much larger trunk.
The two rivals can be equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox, and that’s the one you need for increased driving excitement. Otherwise, you’ll get a six or seven-speed automatic transmission.
The G37 was also only available with a 3.7-litre V6 producing 330 horsepower, or 348 with the IPL trim (Infiniti Performance Line). Depending on the model, the power could be transmitted to all four wheels, or the rear ones only. Note that this naturally aspirated engine has proven to be quite reliable in general, and is relatively cheap to maintain.
The 3 Series Coupe offers a few versions too: some with a rear-wheel drive and some with the xDrive all-wheel drive. An entry-level 328i with a six-cylinder generates only 230 horsepower, while a 335i/335is— also a six-cylinder, but turbocharged— produces 300 or 320 horsepower. It’s undoubtedly one of the best engines in its category, but you must make sure it’s in good condition! And let’s not forget the formidable M3, with its 414-horsepower V8.
Despite its power and precision, the G37’s behaviour on the road is fluid and focused on comfort. The 3 Series Coupe shows more vigour and firmness, which will please the driver but maybe not the passengers as much. Also, its iDrive multimedia system is likely to cause frustration.
Finally, the Bavarian carmaker’s image and prestige could be a decisive factor for some buyers, but they shouldn’t overlook the G37, which is generally more economical and practical on a daily basis.
