2016-2022 Lexus RX : What You Should Know Before You Buy
The very popular Lexus RX is getting a major makeover for model year 2023. But that’s not all: it’s also getting a new multimedia interface that transforms the driving experience, in addition to offering four different motorisations, including a rechargeable hybrid. The company really went all out to remain at the forefront.
Will the former generation become unattractive all of a sudden? Of course not. The 2016-2022 Lexus RX still has solid arguments to convince the pre-owned luxury SUV buyers. Are you considering one? Here’s what you need to know about it.
The RX was able to secure a faithful customer base by offering outstanding reliability, fool-proof safety, and high-quality materials. Entirely redesigned for 2016, it mainly relies on a 3.5-litre V6 with 295 horsepower (RX 350). This engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, delivers power to the four wheels, and can easily tow up to 3,500 lb. And unlike a turbocharged four-cylinder, it doesn’t require premium fuel, which is even better.
The same V6 can be associated with electric motors to create a hybrid system producing 308 horsepower (RX 450h). Here, the power is controlled by a surprise-free continuously variable transmission. The result is an average fuel consumption that drops from 10.7 to only 8 L/100 km. However, the battery at the back reduces the trunk’s capacity from 694 to 510 litres.
For more style and excitement, consider the F Sport trim, with its bigger wheels, a more aggressive design and a stiffer suspension, among other things. And for a maximum of luxury, choose a specimen fitted with the Executive package, which includes many desirable options.
Families who need three rows of seating have not been forgotten: Lexus added an extended wheelbase RX L for 2018, available with all mentioned motorisations and easier to drive than the large GX and LX , thanks to its lighter weight. But be aware that the third row is only suitable for children and the trunk’s volume has been reduced to only 212 litres. On the other hand, the captain’s chairs that can replace the middle-row bench seat offer plenty of comfort.
For 2020, the Lexus RX was upgraded with aesthetic modifications, slightly improved performances, an enhanced safety equipment and additional connectivity services. The multimedia interfaces were also fitted with new screens, the Lexus Enform system, as well as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. Then, for the last model year of that generation, a dark-looking Moonlight Edition was added to the line-up.
Among the weak points of the 2016-2022 Lexus RX, we noticed a lack of precision in the steering and a rather uninspiring driving experience, added to the disappointing console’s touch pad (the infamous “Remote Touch”), which is very frustrating to use. Finally, we can’t ignore the fact that the RX’s popularity has a negative consequence: it’s one of the most frequently stolen vehicles in Québec. You’ve been warned!
