It's a mystery. Although Jeep has said that it intends to bring it to market by the end of the year, it is impossible to rely on the announced timetable. In recent years, Stellantis has proven that its plans are pure improvisation.
Need some examples? The launch of the Dodge Charger Daytona and Jeep Wagoneer S was delayed by a year, ideas for the Chrysler brand were changed, and then assembly of the new Jeep Compass, supposedly built in Canada, was postponed. We don't even know if it's still on the drawing board! So, what's next for the new Cherokee?
Naturally, this is a flagship product for Jeep, which has been suffering for some time from the lack of more compact and affordable vehicles. That said, it's impossible for me to believe that this product will arrive on time, at a time when the company is in serious trouble.
As for powertrains, all indications are that Jeep will exploit the 2-liter turbo engine of the Dodge Hornet and Jeep Wrangler. We can also assume that the platform used for the Dodge Hornet (and the Alfa Romeo Tonale) and the Grand Cherokee will be used for the new Cherokee. A hybrid powertrain is also planned.
The Cherokee will be aimed at the North American market, and will probably be assembled in the USA. We know that Jeep is currently enjoying good success with the Compass and Avenger in Europe, meaning that the manufacturer could also offer the Cherokee there. However, it's clear that the first target market will be our own. It remains to be seen what Stellantis' strategy will be with this product, which must not be overpriced in order to regain its place in the market. To be continued...
