The new Nissan LEAF voted 2026 World Car of the Year by women
On International Women's Day yesterday, a female jury composed of 86 journalists from 55 countries around the world crowned the new Nissan LEAF as the 2026 World Car of the Year according to women.
The completely redesigned electric compact beat out the other finalists and winners in their respective categories, namely the Škoda Elroq, Mercedes-Benz CLA, Hyundai IONIQ 9, Toyota 4Runner, and Lamborghini Temerario.
Marta García, executive chair of Women’s Worldwide Car of the Year, explained that the jury focused on vehicles that stand out not only for their features and technology, but also for their ability to effectively meet people’s real, everyday needs.
“The vote was very close. Several models received similar support, which reflects the exceptional quality and diversity of the automotive industry today,” she said. “In the end, the Nissan LEAF came out on top. It embodies a mature and intelligent vision of electrification, making electric mobility truly practical and accessible.”
The judges also highlighted its smooth and quiet ride, its remarkable fuel efficiency, particularly in urban and suburban areas, and its interior design, which prioritizes space and ease of use for a user-friendly experience.
The Nissan LEAF succeeds the Hyundai Santa Fe, which was voted Women's World Car of the Year 2025. It is also one of three finalists for the 2026 World Car of the Year award, which will be presented on April 1 at a ceremony at the New York International Auto Show.

Although it's one of the 10 least expensive electric vehicles in 2026, the LEAF remains significantly more expensive and less compelling than some other models, including the Kia EV4 and Chevrolet Bolt. It also doesn't offer optional all-wheel drive like the Subaru Uncharted and Toyota C-HR. On the other hand, while the technology has taken a big leap forward, the fact that the cargo volume has decreased compared to the previous generation is very disappointing.
