The Ford Maverick small crate has more than one trick up its sleeve
Not all pickup buyers need a full-size model. Other drivers, accustomed to SUVs, would like to take advantage of an open rear cargo bed. For all these people, a mid-size or even compact pickup might be just the ticket.
The Ford Maverick has been a popular choice since its launch three years ago. New or used, many consider it because of its practical size around town, but may be concerned about the length of the body - and rightly so. It measures just 4.5 feet, which is unfortunately very short when it comes to transporting bulky objects. Nevertheless, it's versatile and offers several advantages, which is why Ford calls it “FLEXBED”.
Firstly, in terms of width, there are no real concerns. It's possible to transport 4x8-foot sheets of plywood, for example - up to 18 - by placing them above the wheel arch on the half-open tailgate. Not bad, is it?
When the tailgate is fully lowered, the bed extends to six feet. With a payload capacity of 1,500 lbs, you could even fit a standard-size ATV!
The load sill is barely 30 inches off the ground. What's more, the body walls are low enough that even a person in the fifth percentile of height can easily drop or pick up items, according to Ford.
Then there are slots for sliding 2x4s and 2x6s to compartmentalize cargo or create racks. There are also two tie-down hooks, four D-rings and integrated threaded holes. Those in need of inspiration for layout options need only scan the QR code in the box to find some - no kidding.
Finally, in addition to a 110-volt outlet, a 12-volt power supply is pre-wired behind a removable panel on each side of the body, near the tailgate, to facilitate electrical projects. All that's left to do is get out your tools!
