The best sport compacts in 2024
Today, we conclude our review of the best buys of 2024 according to The Car Guide with a category that's not lacking in excitement: sporty compacts. We're talking about cars that are both practical for everyday use and great fun to drive, even on the racetrack.
Nearly a dozen models are available on the Canadian market, but which one should you choose? Read on to discover our top 3!
1. Volkswagen Golf GTI / Golf R
German twins remain our number-one choice in this category, despite their more sober appearance. All they need is an efficient multimedia interface and ergonomic controls. The strength of the Golf GTI and Golf R lies in the rare combination of agility, stability and performance they offer, each in its way. What's more, their interiors are comfortable, spacious, well-finished and full of storage space.
The GTI continues to send its 241 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque to the front wheels only, while the R makes the most of its all-wheel drive, with 315 hp and up to 295 lb-ft of torque. The latter combines refinement with performance (0-100 km/h in 4.3 seconds according to our tests) like no other. Its different driving modes also allow greater latitude in terms of behavior.
Manual gearbox enthusiasts, hurry up and take advantage, because the revised and “upgraded” 2025 models will be automatic only. The 2024 edition will therefore remain coveted for many years to come, and should not suffer any depreciation.
2. Subaru WRX
The sedan, perceived as a “road-legal” rally icon, was renewed two years ago, and is adding to its range for 2024 with two new versions, including the RS, which is even more at home on a racetrack. With its vigorous acceleration, hard-to-fail handling and slightly more archaic character that will appeal to any sports driving enthusiast, the WRX remains one of the most interesting sports sedans on the market.
The driving position is found in a snap, and visibility is excellent. As for the all-wheel drive with constant grip, it's as effective as ever when road conditions deteriorate, or even when the WRX is pushed further into tight bends.
With 271 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, this Japanese sports compact is more exhilarating to drive on a daily basis than in the past, with a stiffer body and more communicative steering. It's hard to find a better platform for year-round fun behind the wheel. Especially at this price level.
An exceptional car with better aesthetics than the first generation, the Civic Type R is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that develops 315 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. Equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox, it sprints from 0-100 km/h in 5.4 seconds. Unlike the Golf R and WRX, you have to forget about the all-wheel drive, which affects acceleration times.
The steering, on the other hand, is a model of precision, and the two-axle front suspension eliminates torque steer. Of course, comfort is very relative. The ride is very firm, as are the seats, although the latter are beautifully designed and very supportive.
The Civic Type R isn't for everyone, due to its higher price and very limited distribution in Canada. That said, if you do manage to get your hands on one, chances are it will be an excellent investment.
Other options?
Finally, if you're looking for a more classic two-door sports car, the Toyota GR 86 and Subaru BRZ duo give you the most bang for your buck, in our opinion. Among luxury sports cars, the Chevrolet Corvette remains the benchmark for 2024, ahead of the Porsche 911 and 718.
