Porsche confirms the imminent end of the gasoline-powered 718 Boxster and Cayman
Already largely abandoned in Europe, the gasoline-powered Porsche 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman won't be around much longer elsewhere in the world. In fact, we're talking just a few months.
Porsche's North American communications director, Frank Wiesmann, confirmed to Motor1 this week that both cars will cease production in October at the Zuffenhausen plant in Germany.
In 2024, their last full year of production, the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman increased their worldwide sales by around 15% on the previous year. In Canada, the first one even jumped by almost 50%, reaching 502 units (versus 328 for the coupe). The trend continued in the first quarter of 2025.
The next step, as we know, will be electric - even if the Porsche brand in general has decided not to rush into the transition. However, development of future battery-powered 718 models is far from complete. CEO Oliver Blume spoke of an arrival on the market “in the medium term”. According to him, we can expect more power, more dynamism and, believe it or not, “a pure driving experience”.
In short, the gasoline-powered 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman will not continue to be sold alongside their electric heirs, as the Macan will do with the Macan EV until next year (although an all-new compact SUV could arrive by the end of the decade). The Cayenne, on the other hand, will be around well beyond 2030, even if Porsche adds a twin without a combustion engine.
Canadians will therefore be unable to order a new Boxster or Cayman for some time to come. And if the next generation of zero-emission cars isn't quite as successful as expected, watch out: Porsche's chief financial officer, Lutz Meschke, has previously hinted that a hybrid or even combustion variant could be added to the menu.
